🪰 Black Flies Are Back! 🐶🐾

As the weather warms, black flies (also called buffalo gnats) start appearing—especially in May and early summer. These tiny pests may be small, but they can cause big discomfort for our pets!

🐕 What You Might See:
* Red, crusty welts or circular lesions (often on belly, ears, or groin)
* Itchiness or irritation
* Swelling or mild allergic reactions

Black fly bites can look alarming, but they're usually not dangerous and often clear up in a few days.
🧴 What You Can Do:

* Avoid dawn and dusk walks —that’s peak black fly activity
*Use vet-approved insect repellents** (NEVER use human products like DEET on pets)
* Provide shade and shelter outdoors
* If your pet has a strong reaction, call us for treatment options

Dear Valued Clients and Friends,

After many years of service, deep reflection, and with heartfelt appreciation, I’m writing to share some important news. I have made the decision to seek a new leader for Bedford Animal Hospital and start my transition to my active retirement.

This hospital has been a proud part of the Bedford community for over 70 years, and it has been my honor to lead it for more than 40 of those. Throughout that time, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an incredible team and caring for generations of your beloved pets. The relationships we’ve built, and the trust you’ve placed in us, are among the most meaningful experiences of my life.

As I prepare for this transition, my foremost goal has been to ensure that the hospital remains in the hands of someone who shares our commitment to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care. With that in mind, I’m delighted to introduce Dr. Sarah Gorman, who will be taking over ownership and leading Bedford Animal Hospital into its next chapter.

Dr. Gorman is an exceptional veterinarian whose passion for animals, clinical skills, and dedication to client service make her the perfect person to carry this practice into its next chapter. She shares the same values that have long been the foundation of our care: respect, empathy, and a genuine love for animals.

The transition to Dr. Gorman’s leadership will take place over the next several weeks, and I look forward to being present during this time to help ensure a smooth and seamless handoff. I’m also excited to personally introduce many of you to Dr. Gorman and continue seeing you and your pets at the hospital as we go through this meaningful transition together.

Our incredible team will remain in place, and everything you value about Bedford Animal Hospital—our philosophy, our standard of care, and our commitment to you—will remain unchanged.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and to care for the pets you call family. I am proud of what we’ve built and profoundly grateful for your support. As I pass the keys to Dr. Gorman, I do so with confidence, excitement, and trust that Bedford Animal Hospital will continue to thrive for years to come.

With sincere gratitude,
Dr. Bill Sofield

A Message from Dr. Sarah Gorman:
Dear Clients,

It is a true honor to step into the role of owner and veterinarian at Bedford Animal Hospital, a place with such deep roots in the community and a legacy of excellence in animal care. I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Sofield for his trust and for the opportunity to carry on the mission he and his team have so thoughtfully nurtured over the decades.

As a veterinarian, I believe that pets are family, and I’m committed to ensuring that every patient who walks through our doors receives the same level of care, attention, and respect they always have. I look forward to meeting each of you and your pets and becoming part of this remarkable community.

Thank you for welcoming me. I’m excited to lead Bedford Animal Hospital into its next chapter—with heart, integrity, and a deep love for the work we do.

Warm regards,
Dr. Sarah Gorman
