These are the things I have the hardest time convincing new clients to do.
Once they do it, they get it.
Here are a few misconceptions/arguments I hear.
1. Very few dogs need to walk behind you all of the time, them walking in front of you is not usually a power play. This walk is FOR THEM, let them sniff stuff.
2. You are not bribing your dog. You're rewarding them for checking in.
3. If the last picture your dog sees of the walk is excitement, it just builds. Sit down for a minute.

Ghost would like to petition for employee of the month since he's been working very hard all week helping dogs.
I might let him take over social media as well and just take up chauffeuring him around.

Benefit of the doubt.
I said to a client, "I think your dog may have pain in her back end."

What did I notice to make me think that might be a possibility?
The way the dog moved was... Different.
She often shifted her hips to one side in a sit.
She couldn't stay in a sit for more than a few seconds(but she just stood up, she didn't go anywhere).
When I touched her back end she shrieked.

But she ran around like crazy. She jumped up on furniture, she didn't limp.

"She's a drama queen," her owner said.

I have a hard time believing dogs are obstinate on purpose when every other indication says otherwise- appeasement behaviors, wiggly body, active engagement.

She just didn't seem to want to stay in a sit.

As a person who also can't sit like a normal human for long periods of time because of pain, most people would never know. I just look odd. Going from cross-legged to stretched out every few minutes.

Maybe she just finds sit uncomfortable.
Maybe she doesn't understand the command.
Maybe she doesn't like the feeling of putting her butt on concrete.

So... I often give the benefit of the doubt. Especially with arbitrary obedience commands like sit. The answer is rarely, "they just don't listen."

If you've thought your dog was not listening on purpose, give us a call.

I consider this job 80% coaching people.
The biggest thing I'm constantly coaching people about is the way they see their dog.
If you see your dog as traumatized, overly dominant, or a menace in some way it usually doesn't help anyone.
Your emotions are coloring the way you treat your dog.
Dogs ARE opportunistic. They are professional loop hole finders, but they're not usually doing things to purposefully make your life harder.
They need guidance and clarity and sometimes they have a bad day.

We go up to the mountains at least once a month so the dogs get a change of scenery.
They definitely needed it.

Off leash nature walks are healing for both dogs and humans.

Yes, they have e-collars on. I used Lucifer's 1 time. I honestly don't think he could hear me over the water.
They're there for safety. We've been lucky enough that we haven't seen any predators, but I don't take chances like that.
