I have heard some funny noises from dogs in my time at Southpaws Playschool for Dogs and Puppies. Just this morning, Miss Laurie and I were laughing at the noises that puppy Toby the pug was making.

Peanut butter, sugar free gum, and many other food products contain xylitol. Xylitol causes an extreme and dangerous drop in a dog's blood sugar.

When you're making an emergency plan, one important thing to include is an emergency kit for your pet as well as you and your family. Just as you do with your family’s emergency supply kit, think first about the basics for survival, such as food and water. Have two kits, one larger kit if you are sheltering in place and one lightweight version for if you need to evacuate. Review your kits regularly to ensure that their contents, especially foods and medicines, are fresh.
According to ready.gov/pets, here are some items you may want to include in an emergency kit for your pet:
🐶Food. Keep several days’ supply of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
💧Water. Store a water bowl and several days’ supply of water.
💊Medicine. Keep an extra supply of the medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container.
🩹First aid kit. Talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pet’s emergency medical needs.
🐾Collar with ID tag and a harness or leash. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag. Have copies of your pet’s registration information and other relevant documents in a waterproof container and available electronically.
🧳Traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet.
🧼Grooming items. Pet shampoo, conditioner and other items, in case your pet needs some cleaning up.
🧻Sanitation needs. Include pet litter and litter box (if appropriate), newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pet’s sanitation needs.
📸A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in identifying your pet.
🦴Familiar items. Put favorite toys, treats or bedding in your kit. Familiar items can help reduce stress for your pet.

Did you know that you can get free stickers (or clings) at Southpaws? If First Responders can't get in touch with you, Southpaws will take them in. Our number is on the sticker as well so that they can get in touch with us if necessary.
If you don't see them in the airlock, ask for them. We will be very happy to give you as many as you need.

It's the weekend before July 4th. Don't be complacent; the idiots who HAVE fireworks are going to be shooting them off in the neighborhoods for the next few days.
Take your dogs outside to potty before dark and then keep them inside. Play music, television and turn on the fans. Give everyone a cozy place to hide if they need to, but keep track of where everyone is.
Today is National ID Your Pet Day, created by the ASPCA. With 4th of July and its frightening fireworks right around the corner, it is imperative that pets are set up with proper identification. All pets should be wearing a properly fitted collar (2 fingers should fit in the collar horizontally against the neck) with a tag. Tags should have the pet’s name, at least one current phone number, and a home address. Implanted microchips also act as extra security in the event that a collar or tag is lost. At Southpaws Playschool, all dogs are provided with a ‘Southpaws Dog’ tag, free of charge. In the event that your pet is lost and we recieve a phone call, we will pick your pet up and bring them to Southpaws - no questions asked. Keep your pets safe and observe this important day!

I have posted about this subject already this year, but it bears repeating: DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS SWIMMING IN LADY BIRD LAKE! You will lose them in the worst way.

Thank you Sonya for instructing both of us in Little Dudes and Divas Class. What we’ve learned is a game changer!

Both teams did such a great job, thinking through how to get the dogs to manipulate the paint in their own way.

Last week, to celebrate the Spring Holidays, we let the dogs choose a toy from a pile. Lots of blooper shots--LOTS. However, Gus and Kara showed us all how it's done by choosing right away. Everyone, blooper shot or not, enjoyed picking a toy to take home.

Eenie, meenie, minie, mo... How many foster pups can find their way home?? 🏡🐶 . . . Our newest foster litter has come such a long way, literally AND metaphorically. In the past three weeks, these squishy things were rescued from an at-capacity shelter, travelled 200+ miles along Texas roads, got their first and second round of vaccinations, started playing with other puppies, and have gained enough weight to the point that they look like brand-new pups. . .
