Southpaws will be closed on Saturday starting June 15th until further notice. We need time to recover from the extreme heat.

Boarding drop offs and pick ups will be available during feeding time at 9 am on Saturdays.

FUNNY or FRUSTRATING?

This dog thought that it would be a great idea to roll around in freshly mowed grass.

Personally, I would vote funny. The dog is having a great time, no harm is being done, and you have the opportunity to own a green dog for a while.

We have Ellie Mae living with us at Southpaws while she waits to meet her forever familly.

In addition, we have been working with New Hope Animal Rescue and several of their dogs come regularly to school with us.

Although we will be closed for the holiday, we are accepting drop-offs for boarding at 9 am on Saturday, 5/25. Pick-ups are available on Monday 5/27 at 9 am.

We love our dogs at Southpaws, no matter where they come from: a breeder, a shelter or the street. All of them are precious to us.
But this story is pretty cool!

The border collie-papillon mix got a round of "app-paws" for her surprise win after finishing the race in under 30 seconds. She is the first mixed-breed and first 12-inch dog to win the competition.

Ellie Mae is dreamy! She is available for adoption through Southpaws Playschool for Dogs and Puppies. We would love to have you meet her!

Ellie Mae is fully vetted, heartworm negative and has been through our Big Goofy Teenagers manner class. She gets along well with other dogs and loves every person that she meets.

We don't just play with dogs all day. We also pick up p**p!

It's beginning to look a lot like vacation season around Southpaws. If you can help us out by entering your reservations as soon as possible, we would greatly appreciate it. We would like to take some time, too, if we can (although we promise to miss the dogs while we are gone!).

UPDATE: I just got a call from the hospital (1 am): Wyatt is out of surgery and it went well. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will probably come home on Wednesday. Thank you so much for all your good energy that surrounded Wyatt and helped him through.

Please, everyone say a little Word of Healing to your Higher Power for our precious baby Wyatt.
He went to the emergency room at 9 o'clock tonight and was diagnosed with Bloat (GDV). His stomach has flipped on itself.
He is currently in surgery. The vet at the emergency hospital said that his prognosis is fairly good, but this is a very serious surgery and anything could happen.

Above all, when someone asks to interact with your dog in any way (and they should always ask), find out from your dog whether the interaction is welcome. Do they want to meet this person? Play with these stranger dogs? Let a small child near them?

And then respect their answer. It's perfectly alright to say NO. NO is a complete sentence. And there is no need to explain or apologize. Your dog's feelings matter more, always.

Our own social 'rules' tend to have us saying 'go and say hello'. We forget that dogs might be sore, tired, worried or simply not interested. As dogs age they might be worried about getting bumped or hurt. Older dogs have different needs. Want to learn more about the ageing dog's needs, drop a line below.
