This is great food for thought for those of us who have both 2- and 4-legged kids. I'll add to it, I often see people pressure their dogs into meeting children. I've had people literally shove ambivalent dogs at my 19-month-old son. When this happens, I break off the interaction immediately. But I always feel so bad for the dog....

I was speaking with someone who has a DINOS (dog in need of space) earlier this week and was reminded of this poster.

The original English version of the Ask First! Poster: Ask First! Be Responsible, Respectful, Safe.

Introducing the new DINOS: Dogs in Need of Space PSA courtesy of Design Lab Creative Studio! It's a simple reminder that dogs should be under our control at all times and to ask permission before we allow ourselves, our kids, or our dogs to approach a dog.

Very heartening news out of Colorado. Due to the number of people who lost their lives in Katrina because they would not leave their pets, the Colorado National Guard has adopted a "No pets left behind" policy in the current flooding disaster. With the motto "Pets are people too," they are evacuating and rescuing animals as well as people. Way to go, Colorado National Guard!

Wet Weather Pet Tip: Isn't this rain fantastic? But muddy paws, not so much. I like to spread a blanket inside the back door when I let the dogs in. Then I have them do quick sits and downs for treats. It does a great job of drying their paws, and I get a bit of training in at the same time:^)
