March is designated as Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month.
Based on the Pet Poison Helpline call volume and extensive database, here are the top 10 most common toxins that Pet Poison Helpline gets called about. When in doubt, call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline (they do charge a consultation fee) to make sure there won’t be a problem. Take special care to keep these toxins out of your pet’s reach and pet-proof your house!

Dog Poisons:
Chocolate
Mouse and Rat Poisons (rodenticides)
Vitamins and Minerals (e.g., Vitamin D3, iron, etc.)
NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.)
Cardiac Medications (e.g., calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, etc.)
Cold and Allergy Medications (e.g., pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, etc.)
Antidepressants (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)

Meet our newest Doctor!

Dr. Brandon J. Louth is a published author in exotic veterinary medicine and has presented at national exotic veterinary conferences on his research in reptile and amphibian medicine. His research includes establishing the husbandry and captive propagation of the Eastern collared lizard, Crotaphytus collaris, and creating their biochemistry reference intervals, and plasma retinol (vitamin A) interval. He also has done research on cane toads, Rhinella marina, and quaker parakeets, Myiopsitta monachus. He received his bachelor’s in biology at The College of William and Mary, where he also played football. He then received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021. He also had a research internship in 2018 at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, being on clinics in their Zoological Medicine and Services and performed research at the Schubot Center for Avian Health. He has a passion working with exotics and advancing exotic veterinary medicine through his research. He has goals to become ABVP board certified in reptile and amphibian medicine. During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Lydia and dog Jax, in addition to taking care of over 140 reptiles.

Meet Dr. Wellford

Dr. Harrison Wellford was born and raised in the mountain state of West Virginia. Dr. Wellford attended West Virginia University for his undergraduate education. He then moved to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2021. While he loves all creatures great and small, Dr. Wellford has a keen interest in exotic animal practice and seeks ABVP board certification in avian medicine. As a new resident to Austin he enjoys exploring all the area has to offer including outdoor activities like paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking and trying new food every chance he gets. He shares his home with a jungle carpet python named Jungera and a tiger salamander named Tigger.

Our clinic experienced some outside water pipe damage during the extreme weather that we experienced this past week. We will be closed tomorrow February 20, 2021 for repairs. Halloween Pet Safety
• Keep candy and other treats out of paw’s reach! Chocolate and the sweetener xylitol- often found in gum and peanut butter- can be very toxic to dogs and cats. Kids should also be reminded not to feed candy to pets.
• Put your dog or cat in a quiet place away from the front door and all those people in strange costumes. This will help prevent them from running out the door when treats are passed.
• If you’re putting your pet in a costume, make sure they feel comfortable in it before taking them out. If the costumes has bells, noisemakers, or strings, they can scare your pet or pose a choking hazard. Use bright collars or vest/costumes for visibility at night.
• Keep your pets indoors on Halloween night! This is especially important for black cats, who can be targeted during the holiday. Also, make sure your pets are microchipped or have a collar with current identification in case they get frightened and run off.
• Be mindful of decoration dangers. Flames from candles, dry ice, and electrical cords are just a few popular Halloween items that can be harmful for pets.

Help us welcome our new Veterinarian, Dr. Tori Tran!

Originally from Connecticut, Dr. Tori received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Miami in 2009. She obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2017 and certificate of veterinary acupuncture that began in China. Dr. Tori worked with mixed animals in the Texas Hill Country from 2017 to 2020. She enjoys working with a wide variety of species, for general practice and acupuncture. In her spare time, she enjoys her time with her husband and fur family including Holly (off-track Thoroughbred), Ace (Border Collie mix), Bianca (long-haired Chihuahua), Gatsby (Siamese mix), and flock of hens.
