πŸ₯΅ We're expecting a very hot weekend, so here are some reminders and a handy chart!

🐢🐱Cats and dogs are both at risk of heat stroke if they are left outside too long!
Please refer to this chart when determining how much outdoor fun your pet should have this weekend. πŸ‘‡

😻 A few reminders:
🌞 Cats and dogs can suffer heatstroke when left outside or in a car too long.
🌞 Heatstroke can happen in as little as 20 minutes when temperatures get as hot as they do in Central Texas.
🌞 Keeping your pets indoors is the best way to protect against heatstroke. Avoid walking dogs in the middle of the day, and provide shade and water when they have to go outside.
🌞 Keep your indoor/outdoor kitties in the house during the heat of the day.

🚨 Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency! Symptoms include:
πŸ™€ Excessive panting
πŸ™€ Vomiting
πŸ™€ Lethargy
πŸ™€ Appearing confused or uncoordinated
πŸ™€ High temperature or hot to the touch

☎️ If you think your pet may be experiencing heatstroke, you can call us at 737-241-5756 or come right in!

Take care of yourselves and your pets during this weekend's heat! 😎

❀️🚨We are so excited to share that we are adding another criticalist! 😺

Dr. Matt Crawford-Jennnings will join our emergency and critical care team in October! πŸŽƒ

πŸŽ“ Matt was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He completed veterinary school and a rotating small animal internship at Virginia Tech (2022 and 2023, respectively), followed by a residency in small animal emergency and critical care at North Carolina State University in 2026.

🩺 He enjoys the fast pace and client education associated with emergency medicine, the acuity and technical skill of the ICU, teaching at various levels, and monitoring and performing emergency abdominal surgeries.
His professional interests include advanced fluid therapy and electrolyte management, sepsis, point of care ultrasound (POCUS), and locoregional/multimodal analgesia.

πŸ₯ Inside the hospital, Matt can often be heard laughing and making dad jokes with his goal of making everyone he meets laugh at least once throughout the day.

😻 Outside of work, he enjoys playing video games, reading sci-fi books, watching horror and thriller movies, and trying out new breweries with his husband, Styles. They have three cats (Hero, Kai, and Nova) and one rabbit (Bunilla Ice). 🐰

πŸ₯° We are so excited to welcome Dr. Crawford-Jennings to our Pet Specialists of Austin team!

Hey y'all, meet this sweetie, Sprig! 🌿

Sprig is a patient of our wonderful oncology team. She was diagnosed with gastrointestinal lymphoma and completed her multi-agent chemotherapy protocol and is in a clinical remission. πŸŽ‰ The team makes sure she gets lots of love during her chemotherapy visits, and she actually seems excited when she arrives at her appointments! πŸ₯°

😨Although chemotherapy is often associated with side effects in people, the incidence of side effects in dogs and cats is low. 😎 We strive to maintain an excellent quality of life for our patients throughout their treatment. πŸ˜‡

πŸ’ƒOur oncology team has a tradition of dressing their patients up in costumes to celebrate the completion of their treatment! Don't you love her outfit? 🀩

Thanks so much to Sprig's parents for bringing her to see us! πŸ₯°

Hey y'all, meet Nico! πŸ‡

🩺 Nico came to see our amazing surgeon, Dr. Reyes-Worth! Dr. Reyes-Worth diagnosed Nico with a high-grade mast cell tumor. Mast cell tumors are aggressive and can spread quickly! 😱Dr. Reyes-Worth removed the tumor and a nearby lymph node to prevent further spreading. πŸ€—

πŸ’Š Nico then came to see our wonderful oncologist, Dr. Sheppard! Dr. Sheppard began administering chemotherapy with the goal of keeping him cancer free. He has been doing great! πŸ₯°

🧐We often see cases like this where surgery can step in first and remove tumors or growths and then oncology can provide the critical chemotherapy treatment!

We are so happy that Nico came to see us and appreciate his parents trusting our team with his care! 😍

Say "Howdy" to Gilgamesh! πŸˆπŸ–€

He came in to see our amazing emergency team for being painful and having a limp tail. 😿 Our criticalist, Dr. Simmonds, worked closely with our incredible neurology team to determine a treatment plan. πŸ™Œ

🧠 Our incredible neurosurgeon, Dr. Passmore, determined that he had herniated his disks and would need surgery. 😱She performed a hemilaminectomy removing the disk material that was causing his issues. 🧐
