The holidays are full of fun, family, and delicious food—but some festive treats can be very dangerous for our furry friends.

As you celebrate, please help keep your pets safe by avoiding these toxic or risky foods:

🚫 Chocolate
🚫 Grapes & Raisins
🚫 Alcohol
🚫 Sugar-free candies (especially those containing xylitol)
🚫 Onions & Garlic
🚫 Turkey & Ham Bones (they can splinter and cause serious internal injuries)

✨ A little extra caution can make sure your pets enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season right alongside you. If you’re ever unsure whether something is safe, we’re just a phone call away! If we are closed, the ASPCA Poison Control hotline is open 24/7!

✨ Holiday Pet Safety Reminder! ✨

While festive plants add cheer to our homes, some can pose serious risks to our furry family members.

🌿 Mistletoe & Holly – These classic holiday greens may look merry, but if ingested they can cause gastrointestinal upset and even cardiovascular issues in pets.

🌸 Lilies – Beautiful but dangerous. Many lilies commonly used in holiday bouquets are extremely toxic to cats and can cause life-threatening kidney failure.

🌺 Poinsettias – Not as deadly as commonly believed, but still capable of causing mild to moderate stomach upset in both cats and dogs.

🎄 Christmas Tree Water – If your tree stand contains preservatives, fertilizers, or stagnant water, it can be harmful to curious pets who take a sip.

💚 Keep these holiday hazards in mind so your celebrations stay safe, bright, and pet-friendly! If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, contact your veterinarian right away.

Looking to include your pup in the holiday magic this year? Austin has some great dog-friendly Christmas events you can enjoy together, including:

✨ Peppermint Parkway – December 18th is Santa Paws Night at COTA! Dogs who made the nice list are invited to join in on the holiday fun, with special treats provided at check-in, photo ops with Santa, and a dog-treat food truck.

✨ Tail of Lights in Cedar Park –December 13th! You and your pup can walk a holiday-themed trail, enjoy “yappy hour” treats, browse pet-friendly vendors, and even take photos with “Santa Paws.

✨ Dog-friendly patios and pop-up holiday markets all around the city.

Before you head out, remember — not all dogs enjoy crowds, bright lights, or loud holiday music. And that’s okay! Every pet has their own comfort zone.

Highland’s Pet Medical Clinic has kept the dogs and cats of Austin healthy and happy since 1978. We are conveniently located just north of downtown, between the old Austin Java and Pease Park.

Our purpose at HPMC is to go above and beyond the service expectations of the client by providing exceptional medicine, surgery, and customer service which improves the health, welfare, and quality of life of all animals and their owners. We recognize the human/animal bond and the value of the companionship brought to us by these special household family members.
