🐾 Dog Days of Summer – But Beware the Water! 🌊☀️

Austin summers are hot, and our pups love to cool off in local lakes, rivers, and creeks. But did you know that these natural waters can pose serious health risks to your dog?

⚠️ Common summer hazards include:
🐛 Giardia & other parasites – Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
🦠 Leptospirosis – A dangerous bacteria found in warm, stagnant water.
☠️ Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) – Highly toxic and potentially fatal to dogs.
🧫 Flesh-eating bacteria & other harmful microbes – Rare, but extremely dangerous.
✅ What you can do:
– Avoid letting your dog drink from or swim in warm, stagnant, or algae-covered water.
– Rinse your dog after water play.
– Keep vaccinations (like Lepto) up to date.
– Watch for signs of illness and contact us if you’re concerned.

Check out https://www.austintexas.gov/page/algae-austins-waterways for the most up to date information on algae blooms.

We’re here to keep your best friend safe all summer long! 💙🐶

🦷 Did You Know? 80% of Dogs and 70% of Cats Have Dental Disease by Age 3!

**We are offering $100 off of dental cleanings for the whole month! Spots are limited and filling up fast!**

Just like humans, pets need regular dental care to stay healthy. Dental disease doesn’t just cause bad breath, it can lead to pain, infection, and serious health problems affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Signs of dental disease include:
- Bad breath (not just "doggy breath"!)
- Yellow or brown buildup on teeth
- Red or bleeding gums
- Drooling or pawing at the mouth
- Difficulty eating or loss of appetite

Good news: Dental disease is preventable!
We recommend:
- Daily or regular tooth brushing with pet safe toothpaste
- Dental chews or treats such as Oravet Chews and Greenies
- Prescription dental diets when indicated
- Yearly dental exams and professional cleanings

A clean mouth = a healthier, happier pet.
🗓️ Schedule your pet’s dental checkup today and let’s keep those tails wagging and whiskers twitching pain free!

Our manager, Zack, came to the rescue to fix the door to one of our exam room doors last week. It completely came off its hinges and Zack quickly bought new screws and his screwdriver and saved the door. A manger’s work is never done, and we are so lucky to have the best one!

👂 Is Your Pet Dealing with an Ear Infection?
Ear infections are one of the most common (and uncomfortable!) issues we see in dogs and cats at Highland's. If your pet is shaking their head, scratching their ears, or you notice a funky smell coming from them — it could be time for a vet visit.

🩺 Common signs include:
Head shaking or tilting
Redness or swelling
Dark discharge or odor
Pawing at the ears
Sensitivity when touched

👎 Left untreated, ear infections can lead to hearing loss or chronic pain. But the good news? Ear infections are usually treatable when caught early!

🐶 Prevent them by:
Keeping ears clean and dry (especially after baths or swimming)
Watching for allergy symptoms (allergies are a big cause of ear infections)
Regular vet checkups — especially for floppy-eared breeds and allergy dogs
💬 If you’re worried about your pet’s ears, don’t wait. Call us at 512-476-1069 to get them feeling better fast!
❤️ Your pet’s comfort is our priority.

Our clinic’s towels have been working overtime keeping our furry patients warm, dry, and snuggly, and they’re ready for retirement! If you have any old towels looking for a second life, we’d love to give them a new job.

Big, small, fluffy, or flat we’ll happily take them all! Just drop them off during our regular hours and get a tail wag or a purr as thanks.

Thanks for helping us keep our critters comfy — we appreciate you!

Sweet Marbles was in for a recheck today, but found the perfect little hideaway under the desk instead. 🐱💙

We can’t blame you, Marbles, the world feels a little safer with a cozy corner to curl up in.

Sending extra love to all our shy kitties (and their humans) this Monday!

A gentle reminder: Vet visits can be stressful for our more timid friends. If your cat gets nervous, bring a familiar blanket or toy, a little piece of home can make a big difference!
