📚🐴 Barn and Book Club was a summer hit at Chastain Horse Park!

Each week, our campers dove into meaningful stories—“Out of My Mind” and “Wishtree”—and brought the pages to life through creative discussions, hands-on activities, and time spent with our amazing horses.

From horse time to story time, it was a magical blend of learning, laughter, and connection. 💫

We loved watching our campers grow in confidence, build friendships, encourage one another, explore new vocabulary, and engage deeply with the themes of our summer reads.

This special combination of books and barn time made for unforgettable moments—and lots of smiles! 💬🧡

Supplemental therapy for 6th – 12th graders that weaves together learning horsemanship with psychotherapy. Great for tweens and teens who could benefit from active therapeutic sessions in an outdoor setting. This type of therapy is particularly helpful in treating adolescent anxiety, depression and ADHD related challenges. (Link in bio to K-Equine for more information)

Being a tween and teen is hard. Changing hormones combined with peer pressure at school, expectations to perform at school and in extracurriculars, getting along with and feeling connected to friends, making decisions, and keeping up with an often-rigorous daily schedule builds stress for adolescents in middle and high school. Like physical health, adolescent mental health needs to be priority. Therapy for teens can serve as a protective factor to help them feel supported and provide an outlet for processing stress and emotion.

The horse arena can be a therapeutic setting that creates space for and holds emotion for a person who is grieving.

This September, join Kelly Stephens, LMFT, of K-Equine and Chastain Horse Park in a women-only group focusing on Grief and Loss. Kelly combines her expertise in traditional psychotherapy with her love for horses through additional certifications and training in equine-assisted psychotherapy. Please see her link in our bio to learn more and signup!

Being outdoors with the horse herd creates a feeling of being truly present. The daily routine, stresses, stimulations are set aside, and the mind-body-heart connection can be nurtured. Client participants have shared this setting can feel therapeutic just in the way it invites grounding, focus, and replenishment. Interacting with these large, non-judgmental, curious, and empathetic animals can offer a different form of healing.

Welcoming Frances to the Chastain Horse Park Staff as Therapeutic Program Coordinator and a CTRI - In Training

Frances has been a dedicated member of the Chastain community since 2009, bringing years of hands-on experience and a deep passion for our mission. What began as a decade-long journey in our lesson program—including time on the Chastain IEA team—grew into years of consistent volunteer service as both a side walker and horse leader. Frances has also served as a lead summer camp counselor, contributed to the care and conditioning of our therapy horses, and completed her Girl Scout Gold Award project in support of our Therapeutic Program.

Now, in her new staff role, Frances will bring together her deep connection to Chastain Horse Park and her strong academic and professional background to support and strengthen our programs. A magna cm laude graduate of Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and honors distinction, Frances’s studies focused on Sports Business, Digital and Social Media Marketing, Risk and Crisis Communication, and Writing for PR and Advertising. These skills, paired with her long-standing involvement at the Park, make her uniquely equipped to serve as a key liaison between our staff, volunteers, and program participants.

Please join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter as Frances steps into her role as Program Coordinator.

Chastain Horse Park Welcomes Whitney Phippen as Equine Assisted Learning Specialist

We are thrilled to welcome Whitney Phippen to the Chastain Horse Park staff as our new Equine Assisted Learning Specialist!

Born and raised in Southern California, Whitney began her career in education after earning her teaching credential from Cal State San Marcos in 2007. Upon relocating to Atlanta in 2009 with her husband, she discovered a deep passion for advocating for students with disabilities and their families.

In 2012, Whitney earned her Master’s degree in Special Education and Behavior Analysis—an experience that introduced her to the transformative field of hippotherapy. Her journey led her to Chastain Horse Park as a volunteer, where she witnessed firsthand the powerful impact horses can have when paired with students of all abilities.

Whitney brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as a Lead Teacher in a Title I public school, Inclusion Specialist, Learning Specialist, and Orton-Gillingham certified educator. She also served on the Board of Directors for the International Dyslexia Association of Georgia. Her professional journey reflects a strong commitment to supporting learners with a range of developmental and learning differences.

As Equine Assisted Learning Specialist, Whitney will lead the growth of our Equine Assisted Learning program with Atlanta Public Schools (APS) and will spearhead the development of new literacy initiatives designed to serve diverse learning communities through the healing power of horses.

Please join us in giving Whitney a warm welcome as she brings her passion, expertise, and vision to Chastain Horse Park!
