Stetsons Eighty is a 2018 AQHA bay gelding standing 15.1 hands, solid made with plenty of shape, bone and substance. Stetson is also just a fun horse to have around—he’s easy to catch, full of personality, and a complete ham that always seems to find a way to make you laugh. He’s the kind that enjoys being part of whatever is going on, and that personality carries over into how willing and enjoyable he is to ride. Add in a good pedigree, proper training and a genuinely versatile background, and he is a pretty easy gelding to like.
Stetson is by Samsons Eighty and out of Lil Star Dasher. His pedigree brings together some really good old cow and using-horse blood with a little speed mixed in. On his sire’s side you’ll find Colonel Freckles, Eddie Eighty, Hancock, Doc’s Solano and Poco influence. His dam is by Bay Starlite, a son of Grays Starlight, bringing in Peppy San Badger and Doc Bar, while her bottom side goes back to Some Dasher by Dash For Cash and Peponita. It is a pedigree that makes sense when you ride him—athletic enough to go have a job, but with the substance and versatility we like in an all-around gelding.
Stetson has been properly trained and handled, and he has had a well-rounded education instead of being kept in one lane. He was shown in ranch riding and trail classes when he was younger and has a good foundation in the arena. He’s been started on the flag, has worked cattle, will push and track one, and has enough natural feel for a cow to continue developing in that direction.
I could see Stetson making a really nice turn back horse or lower-level cow horse, and he has the size, build and foundation to make a neat rope prospect as well. He would also be right at home in the ranch riding or versatility classes. He has enough handle to be enjoyable for someone who appreciates a broke horse, without needing a specialized job to keep him useful.
What really makes Stetson appealing is how much else he has done. He rides ba****ck and bridleless, ponies other horses, hauls around to new places, and is comfortable being put to work outside of his normal routine. He has even spent time going English and has jumped up to 2’3”, which says a lot about how willing and adaptable he is.
He is the type you can take to the cattle one day, trail ride the next, haul somewhere new over the weekend, or bring home and enjoy as a really nice all-around family horse. There are plenty of horses that can do one job well; Stetson’s value is in the fact that he has been given the foundation and exposure to comfortably do quite a few of them.
For someone wanting a solid-made, well-trained AQHA gelding with legitimate versatility and a personality you’ll remember, Stetsons Eighty has a lot to offer. Whether his next home wants to continue developing him on cattle, make a rope or ranch horse, show the ranch classes, or just have a broke and enjoyable gelding to trail ride and use, he has the background to step into that role.
