This mare hates it here.
It sounds harsh, but it’s reality.

While our facility is wonderful for the neglected and abused, the horses who were well-loved before coming here have a different perspective.

This kind Spotted Draft mare, Dakota, had one owner and one horse friend her entire life. She is in her early twenties now.
Knowing she couldn’t keep Dakota or her Belgian friend (Bailey) anymore, their owner did everything right. She held onto them for as long as possible, she tried to find safe private placement, and when she couldn’t she reached out to a rescue with plenty of time to spare.

We agreed to take them. In doing so, we took them from the only farm they had ever known. It hurt me to ask them to load onto our trailer the day we picked them up. She loved them, and they loved her. They trusted us and stepped up onto our trailer, not a clue what was in store for them. They were happy that day. Calm.

Then we scrambled their world and flipped it upside down.

“But Bella Run is a wonderful place”, you say.

Sure, but imagine a grandpa who has lived on the family farm his WHOLE LIFE. Now… tell him he can’t stay there anymore and take him to an old folk’s home in a different city.
No notice, no explanation.

That’s how Dakota feels right now.
Many in her situation here have rallied and adjusted.
This is not the case for her.
She is struggling.
We need to find “home” again for her, and soon.

Dakota currently spends her days staring into the distance. The only time she comes alive is when a human is touching her and talking to her. Rub her eyelids and kiss her face and she melts.

We are looking for a non-riding retirement home for both horses- they deserve the live out a quiet pasture life🥰

Come spend a delightful Sunday meandering through eight marvelous gardens around Athens!

The Athens County Humane Society’s 31st Annual Garden Tour is on June 8. Tickets are on sale now at athenshumane.org.

Everything starts at 11 AM at the Convention and Visitors Bureau, 667 E. State Street, Athens (in front of the Community Center). You’ll get a guidebook with addresses and descriptions for the gardens.
Tour the gardens in any order you like. Volunteers will be at each location to answer questions, along with the gardeners themselves.
