We understand that the Fourth of July can be a stressful time for pets and pet owners due to fireworks and other festivities. We want to encourage you to take precautions to help keep your furry friends safe and comfortable during the holiday weekend.
Here are a few tips :
Keep pets indoors:
Provide a safe, quiet space for your pet away from the noise and commotion.
Consider anti-anxiety medication:
If your pet is prone to anxiety during thunderstorms or fireworks, consult with us before July 4th to discuss potential medication options, if your pet(s) are already on medication please call the clinic in advance in order to get them prior too.
Update Identification:
Ensure your pet's collar and tags are up to date with your current contact information.

Did you know that pets are just as susceptible to tick-borne bacterial infections like we are? A tick needs to be attached 24-48 hours in order to transmit lyme disease to pets.
Once transmitted, symptoms can appear 2-5 months after the initial bite. Symptoms can include shifting leg lameness, joint pain, swelling and systemic signs such as fever, lethargy, decreased appetite and swollen lymph nodes.
To properly diagnose we would require an exam and lab work such as a 4DX test checking for antibodies, which takes about 8 minutes to run in the clinic. If positive, we would recommend a 4 week course of antibiotics, like Doxycycline.
If left untreated or undiagnosed pets become susceptible to more severe symptoms such as Lyme Nephritis, a severe form of kidney disease that can be fatal.
The best way to protect your pet is by using monthly preventions and a yearly vaccine. There are now preventions that not only protect against fleas and ticks but heartworm, flea, tick and some intestinal parasites getting you more bang for your buck.
