We provide salt water alongside fresh water year-round and have found the horses consistently drink from both at the same rate. Through the years, we have noticed some patterns of preference for the salt water: the stalled horses go to it within minutes after turnout (they only have plain water inside), and it is usually the first choice after grain feedings and grazing periods.

(Please note horses must always have access to fresh water, salt water should merely be a supplement and never replace fresh water)

Movement helps keep the horse's gut digesting optimally and has the added benefit of producing body heat.

Three ways to encourage movement:

🐎 daily turnout (at least 12 hours)
🐎 hay piles spread throughout the turnout area
🐎 at least 1 herdmate

Did you know horses use hay to stay warm? The fermentation process of long-stem forage in the hind-gut acts as a furnace to generate heat. It is important to keep hay available all day/night to allow the horse to heat itself from the inside out.
