Shelby has already been on quite a journey—and she’s more than ready for her happy ending. Found as a stray at a convenience store in North Carolina, she was brought to a high-kill shelter before being transported north in November to a non-kill shelter. With so many changes in a short time, Shelby became overwhelmed and shy, sometimes barking at unfamiliar faces.
That’s when APR stepped in, placing Shelby in a loving foster home where she could finally decompress and show who she really is.
Black Mouth Curs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and athleticism—and Shelby is no exception. While she can be a bit wary of strangers at first, once she feels safe she becomes incredibly sweet, grateful, and deeply loyal to her people. She’s thriving in home life and has blossomed with routine, patience, and kindness.
Shelby loves playing with other dogs and would do wonderfully with an active canine sibling. A fenced yard would be ideal to help her burn off energy, though she’d also do well with an active family committed to daily exercise. Despite her working-dog roots, Shelby has shown zero prey drive and is very respectful of the resident cat in her foster home.
She is fully potty trained and reliably goes outside. While the crate isn’t her favorite place, she does well using it when needed—especially when her foster mom is away—to prevent boredom-related mischief.
Shelby enjoys toys, bones, and running around to get her energy out. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and truly ready to find her forever family.
