We wanted to introduce you to Midge's surprise litter. Their foster invited friends and family members to choose names, which are listed on individual photos. We're still trying to raise money and supplies to care for this unexpectedly large number of puppers. The supplies list and a donation QR code are on the flier below, and Boofy's Best for Pets on Cutler Avenue is still hosting a collection box. Meanwhile, check out our itty-bitties.

One of our fosters gave us quite the surprise this past weekend.

Remember Midge and Mabel, the two Chihuahuas from the hoarding situation in Las Cruces? They weren't supposed to be pregnant, but Midge was. The vet thought she was pregnant with four puppies due in a few days. The vet wasn't worried about the puppies or Midge, and still saw 4 on the ultrasound/heartbeats and radiographs were done as well. Midge carried the puppies with no sign of distress, other than a huge belly, for another two or so weeks. Last night, she had eight puppies. EIGHT! That means she was pregnant with nine puppies before she lost one.

We've never known of a Chihuahua who had a litter that big. It's extremely rare. Midge is only about 6.5 pounds herself. No wonder the vets were confused by the huge pile of puppies crammed into a tiny dog. She is doing well and being a good mom, and the eight surviving puppies haven't shown any signs of medical problems.

We need help caring for all of them. They're not available for adoption right now, although the puppies will need their own fosters, in groups of two to four, in four or five weeks. We expect them to be weaned by then. If you're interested in fostering, you can fill out the foster application at Tinyurl.com/plrfoster.

For now, we need supplies and monetary donations to keep everyone well-fed and healthy, and then to vaccinate and fix that many puppies, plus Midge and Mabel. We took in two dogs; now we have 10.

The list of needed supplies is on the flier below, as is a link to donate via PayPal. Boofy's Best for Pets at 4900 Cutler Avenue, Ste. F2, Albuquerque, has graciously agreed to serve as a drop-off point for supplies. We'll have an Amazon wishlist up soon. If you have any questions, let us know.

Patches is a cool guy. He gets vaccinated and has done so at our clinics for 3 years. His mom volunteers at the clinics, too. Let your pets be cool like Patches. Take them to our clinic tomorrow at Boofy's! Our web registration system is still behaving unreliably, so you can try registering at Tinyurl.com/YKMYCEBM, or just walk in tomorrow.

Does your dog need the leptospirosis vaccination? Well, you tell us. We introduced a DAPP + Lepto vaccination a few months ago on the advice of one of our partner vets. Leptospirosis is a bacteria dogs can contract via standing water or the urine of infected wildlife. It can cause serious illness, and it can spread to humans. The lepto vaccine also has a higher rate of negative/allergic reactions than other common canine vaccines, and New Mexico has low rates of lepto cases, as another of our partner vets says. We've administered dozens of DAPP + Lepto vaccinations in the past few months, and have been informed of one mild negative reaction, which wasn't officially confirmed to be from the leptospirosis vaccine, although that is the most likely cause.
It's up to the owners to weigh risks and benefits based on their dogs' needs and risk factors. Asking your personal veterinarian is always a good idea in such decisions. We plan to continue to have DAPP (the regular dog core vaccination) and DAPP + Lepto available for owners to choose what they believe is best for their dogs.
Our next clinic is Saturday. Don't forget to sign up at Tinyurl.com/YKMYCEBM

Hank is still waiting for his forever exercise buddy, his forever adventure buddy, his forever nap buddy -- in short, his forever home.
He's a 3.5-year-old, 60-pound mixed breed. He's house-trained, neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. He loves school-aged kids and women. He's nervous but unaggressive with new men, but can warm up, and has lived with men most of his life. He doesn't always do well with other male dogs, but he can have female dog-friends.
Hank is smart and wants to please his people, so we think he could learn to do just about anything. His husky and German shepherd DNA mean he would do best in a household where he could get plenty of mental and physical exercise.
Could that household be yours? If you want to explore the possibility, fill out our adoption application at Tinyurl.com/plradopt
That's the starting point to see if Hank is the right fit for your household.
