What began as an appointment to say goodbye became a second chance ❤️🐾
Xara, a one-year-old American Bulldog Mix, is the beloved companion of a young military family. She had ruptured a ligament in her leg, leaving her in significant pain. Knowing Xara was suffering and unable to afford the surgery, her parents, who both serve in the Army National Guard, made a heartbreaking decision. They scheduled an appointment with Animal Humane New Mexico because we provide affordable euthanasia services.
However, when our team learned more about their circumstances, we knew we could not let a deeply loved dog lose her life simply because her family could not afford an unexpected medical emergency. We used what remained of our C.A.R.E. (Companion Animal Relief and Emergency) Fund to help. Xara underwent surgery to stabilize and repair her knee and is now at home with her family. We are optimistic about her recovery!
We are incredibly grateful to Greater Good Charities who, after hearing Xara's story, reimbursed AHNM for her Cost of Care. Their generosity replenished our C.A.R.E. Fund, ensuring that this critical resource remains available for the next family facing an emergency they are unable to afford.
