On the very off chance, is anyone travelling north towards Te Puke soon and able to help this little lady get to her next adventure? 🐾

She’s heading to a great home where we’re hoping she’ll put that nose, energy and epic drive of hers to good use and possibly become a detection dog 🙏

In return, she promises to be excellent company, supervise all snack stops closely, and happily collect pats along the way.

If you might be able to help with transport, please send us a message. Even sharing this post would really help.

If you can help, please private message the page. Thank you 😀

Some dogs just steal hearts instantly… and this lovely girl was one of them ❤️

After being voluntarily surrendered, it didn’t take long for everyone to see what an absolute sweetheart she is. She has the most beautiful, gentle nature and is such a soft, loving girl. She was clearly raised very well, so credit to her previous owners.

As luck would have it, the stars aligned perfectly and we didn’t even need to advertise her — she had already caught someone’s eye before arriving at the shelter.

She headed off on a trial yesterday after charming us for the past week, and it’s safe to say things are going very well for her so far 🥰

Little Spotty update ❤️

Spotty was recently surrendered to us with chronic, long-term ear infections so severe I couldn’t even see her ear canals… and the smell was absolutely awful 🤢

Pr

We took her straight to the vet and started intensive treatment with medicated cleaner, ear drops, steroids, skin treatment, and a skin-support diet.

After just one week of treatment and lots of love in her foster home, the vet was thrilled with her progress — the bacterial infection in her ears is now about 95% gone! 🎉

She’s looking, and most importantly feeling, so much better. Spotty is now back with her foster Mum, and we’re hopeful that at next week’s check-up the infection she’s lived with for so long will finally be completely gone.

If all keeps going this well… we might be looking at a foster fail 😂

1-week comparison photos are in the comments… just in case you’re eating your dinner and don’t want to see that 🤢

Huge thanks to her foster mum for taking such amazing care of Spotty and being so diligent with her daily ear cleaning and medication. It’s made such a huge difference in just one week ❤️

*previous veterinary treatment had been sought for Spotty before she came to us, and vet records confirm it had initially improved. Unfortunately the infections later returned, and ongoing treatment had become financially unmanageable.*

Just a disclaimer for anyone that watches the videos of Elsa and Maple 😂

I wouldn’t ordinarily let Elsa get this hyped up with a new adoption dog, but it quickly became obvious that Maple could give as good as she gets… and she just kept going back for more 🤣

Despite how full-on the play looks, Maple has really nice body language, isn’t mouthy or nippy, just a bit rude, and they absolutely matched each others energy every step of the way.

“Maple” – Female, desexed, ACD x JRT, 19 months old 🐾

Maple was surrendered to us last week after her owners of 2 months had to admit defeat and realised their property simply couldn’t contain this little Houdini.

This girl is an absolute pocket rocket! In true cattle dog/terrier fashion, Maple is busy, intelligent, adventurous and always looking for the next thing to do. She is 100% a dog that needs a job — whether that’s agility, scent work, tracking, hiking, farm life or another active outlet to keep both her brain and body busy.

Despite her small size, Maple has HUGE energy and personality. Honestly, she reminds me of a mini Malinois 🐊 She’s full on, hilarious, challenging in all the fun ways, and an absolute blast to spend time with if you enjoy high-drive dogs.

She plays fairly hard with other dogs and can be over the top, but she has lovely body language and isn’t mouthy or bitey at all. Even our dogs who are usually quick to correct rude behaviour didn’t feel the need to tell her off — they just matched her energy and joined the fun.

Maple was originally impounded as a stray with Gisborne Council a few months ago and was adopted from there before ending up with us. We’ve been in touch with them and they’re happy for us to find her the right forever home.

She is not suited to a first-time owner or a low-energy home. Maple needs someone committed to training, structure, adventure and building a strong bond with her. In the right home, she’s going to make an incredible little sidekick.

If you think you’re up for the challenge and want some epic fun in your life, get in touch! 🐶

She is:
✔️ Desexed
✔️ Vaccinated
✔️ Microchipped (including NZCAR registration)
✔️ Registered
✔️ Flea & worm treated

🛍️ All trial adoptions include a bag of Black Hawk Pet Care New Zealand food (what we feed at the shelter) thanks to Masterpet New Zealand 🧡

Handsome lad Pete headed back to his original foster home today… 2.5 years after leaving there! His foster family had cared for him for quite some time for Retired Working Dogs NZ Charitable Trust before he was originally rehomed, and when they saw our post yesterday and recognised him, they didn’t hesitate to welcome him back.

One of our Officers dropped him off to Upper Hutt on the way home tonight and he’s slotted right back in. After reacquainting himself with the family, their own dogs and property, he had a bath and is now contentedly snoozing on the couch beside his foster buddy.

A massive thank you to his wonderful foster mum and the dedicated team at Retired Working Dogs for always standing by your dogs, even years later, and for taking Pete back without a second thought.

Fingers crossed this sweet boy’s perfect forever home is just around the corner ❤️

If only dogs could talk… I think Pete would have a few things to say right now — maybe he was trying when I took this photo earlier 😂

We’ve just discovered that this sweet boy was originally adopted through another rescue before eventually ending up surrendered to us last week.

Earlier this evening, I text one of the trustees at Retired Working Dogs NZ Charitable Trust and asked if she could share the post we'd just put up about this handsome boy called Pete.

She text back immediately saying "OMG! We just saw your post and Pete was ours!"

We just got off the phone and it turns out Pete was originally adopted through them in late 2023.

Like us, they have it written into their adoption contract that if owners can no longer care for one of their dogs, the dog must be returned to them. They’re now working on organising a foster home for Pete, but I’ve reassured them that he’s safe, settled, and happy with us in the meantime.

Honestly, this is exactly how rescue should work. Dogs shouldn’t end up bounced around or left uncertain about where they belong.

The good news is Pete is safe, and there are people working together to make sure he lands in the right place this time. ❤️

Meet Pete 🐾

This handsome chap was recently surrendered through no fault of his own. His family (who took him on 6 months ago when his owner moved overseas) loved him dearly, but circumstances beyond their control meant they could no longer give him the time and enrichment he needs.

Pete is around 5 years old and is neutered.

We've been told that he belonged to a working dog trainer at some point, and he definitely shows signs of wanting a job to do — although that could just as easily be his breed traits shining through. He appears to be mostly Heading Dog, though his voice has a definite hint of Huntaway about it!

We were told Pete was mistreated by a male owner as a pup. He is very wary of raised voices and will flinch/cower at quick hand movements, but after spending a week with us, he’s already starting to come out of his shell and his hapoy go lucky personality is really coming out. We get the feeling he’ll be a dog with fairly simple needs — good food, exercise, enrichment, a soft warm bed, and above all, kindness & love.

Pete has some basic training. He knows “sit”, sometimes “down”, will offer a paw to shake, and his recall — especially to a wolf whistle — is extremely good. If you call him in, he’ll often sidle up quietly and lean into you.

But what really lights him up is hearing the words: “You ready?” Suddenly he transforms — ears forward, tail up, dancing around and talking away with excitement.

Pete mostly ignores other dogs and tends to show very little interest in them beyond an initial sniff. He has previously lived with a cat and has also been around older children.

Pete may not be the easiest dog to take on initially, as he can be a bit of a worrier while he builds trust. But honestly, once he clicks with his person or people, we think he’s going to become an exceptionally loyal and loving mate. He will make a great adventure dog and I'm sure would love nothing more than hitting the hills all day as your hiking buddy!

We’ll post a bit more information and some videos tomorrow hopefully ❤️

Meet "Spotty" a lovely little 6-year-old Jack Russell 💛

She was surrendered to us yesterday after her owners could no longer afford the ongoing treatment for her chronic ear condition. Despite previous treatment, her ears had become badly infected again.

We took her straight to the vet, where it was discovered she has a major ear infection. Poor girl must have been incredibly uncomfortable.

Even so, she was an absolute sweetheart at the vet — gentle, trusting, and so well behaved through everything.

Her ears have now had a thorough clean, and she’s started on ear drops and steroids to get the infection under control and help make her much more comfortable.

She’s spending the weekend in foster care while we monitor how she responds to treatment and work out what, if any, further care she may need moving forward.

The best part? She already seems so much happier and more comfortable. Despite everything, she’s still such a bright, happy little dog 🐾

We’ll keep everyone updated on her progress.

How’s this for a Feel Good Friday update? 🐾❤️

We absolutely love receiving — and sharing — updates like this with you all.

"Dunk's settled in to routine really nicely and is building confidence to explore. We're good at "sit", "wait", "leave" and are walking so beautifully on a leash with heaps of slack.

He's proving to be a surprisingly talented scent tracker and is definitely food motivated. I set our very loud fire alarms off and he was unbothered - also really unbothered with things like our robot vacuum cleaner. His self control is impeccable for a 13 week old, e.g. we had possyum on the coffee table 30cm away from his face and he didn't even go near it, focusing on us instead. Such a great listener and only requires absolute minimal correction. That logical reasoning we saw in him is really coming through!

We've also been successfully relaxing on our mat next to our crate and outside. He loooves soft textured beds and rugs and all of those beautiful rolly poly silly puppy behaviours are coming out! And of course - still so focused on us and sooooo cuddly 😍

I think he's equally as in love with us too! It's just incredible to see him feel loved, safe and comfy... such an absolute sweetheart with a beautiful nature 😍 please do share, we're so proud of him!"
