KITTEN SEASON 2026

Exciting!

We are being flooded every day with calls from wonderful people wanting to adopt kittens. Kitten Season has started……with pregnancies and newborns.

Kittens will become available for adoption from October onwards.

There are currently NO kittens over the age of 4 weeks in care. Yet!

September is the month where we replenish resources (we currently have next to nothing for kitten wet food), and we are preparing the Shelter and foster homes for the arrival of the babies.

Overflowing with fun and antics is our Otis! Not deaf, Otis is about 4 months old and ready to bust out of the Shelter and move in to his very first home!

Otis is a delight, great with everyone, great with kids, great with other kittens and cats. Otis likes to be involved with whatever we are doing, he was not particularly helpful during a painting job here, he loves his toys and getting all up in your biz!

What does Paws 4 Life do?

Or rather, what can we offer this coming kitten season with the resources we have. Less than years before that is for sure. Throughout our almost 17 year journey, we have taken in well over 17,000 animals! Are we committed to helping this city have an actual place to take the kittens and cats? Yes.

Paws 4 Life this year can offer to take in kittens and cats that are:
✅Stray
✅Abandoned
✅Socialised/friendly
✅Yes, we can rehome your cat. And yes, there is a surrender fee. We do not have the funding to bring your cat up to health. We do not offer free desexing or free dentals. And no, we will not rehome an animal that does not tick every box for their physical, health and behavioural needs and knowingly pass onto a new family. A surrender fee covers a tiny portion of what this animal needs.

What we cannot take in due to no resources:
❌Wild kittens (older than 8 weeks) and cats
❌Non socialised/non friendly kittens and cats
❌Any cat that has not been checked for a microchip (free at your nearest vet clinic)
❌Any cat that has not been advertised on your local community page/lost and found pages.
❌We do not offer a cat trap service

In years gone by, this all would have been green ticks ✅. But with limited funding, resources, food, foster families, volunteer and staff, we can no longer offer shelter to these animals.

Adopted 🩷

Meet Rosie Parker! A purebred Munchkin with the very short legs! But don’t think that you will just be adopting a little floor hoverboard, Rosie is very capable about jumping all over the shelter, up and down poles, along the catwalks. Could she jump a fence? No. Definitely not.

Rosie Parker is 3 years old and is now in terrific health. Her eyes do need wiping every day or so, this is how she was bred. Her eyes are not sore, not infected, just require wiping much like the Persian breeds.

Rosie Parker is just joy, wrapped up as a little potato! She loves people, she loves interacting, she loves rolling, playing with toys, always comes when she is called, lovely with children, fine with the other cats too. The only thing she is still mastering, and progressing very well with, is being picked up. If you bamboozle her with an ear rub this will buy you some practice time.

Rosie Parker has tried to help in the Shelter but to be fair, that’s created a little more work for the team! Rosie Parker is a delight!

Time for a bit of an update from the desk of the Paws 4 Life Charitable Trust. (one of a few coming!)

This past year we have continued on with taking in kittens and cats from our communities. *CONTENT WARNING* They have been hung up in bags, discarded with the rubbish, set free inside businesses, they have been thrown, kicked, hurt, traumatised, injured, dumped in locked cages, abandoned….the list goes on. We don’t often post up what we see and do on a daily basis as there simply is not enough time each day as the animals in front of us take priority. Sadly, this is normal for us, for you, not so much.

Rescue’s up and down the country are overwhelmed. And let us be clear, it is every other rescue doing the work. There is no leading animal welfare organisation in New Zealand. The rescues start out of necessity, no one else is doing it. Can you walk past an animal welfare issue, the kitten hung up in a bag at the bus stop and do nothing? Neither can we.

Rescues have next to no funding, sponsorship or resources and this is why you see us calling out for help. The real work, the taking in, the rehabilitation, the endless days and nights all to do what is right.

Some rescues try and beat the ambulance to the bottom of the cliff by offering desexing, education and support to keep pets in their homes. Brilliant! But the animal population in New Zealand is ginormous! So the rescues are also the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

If you have a rescue in your local area, don’t be shy. Drop in some meaningful donations, contact them and ask them what would help. Do you work for a business that could donate financial funding or offer sponsorship? Are you free at the moment and could jump in and offer a few hours shelter help each week? At rescues you will find your crew, these people are amazing!
