🖤 Inside the Foyer: Topaz 🖤

Following on from last week's feature on Bijou, today I want to introduce you to her very special son - Topaz.

Looking at him now, it’s hard not to think back to when Bijou first welcomed her three lovely boys into the world. Arriving via caesarean, he was a joy from the very start - drinking from Bijou until he literally fell asleep on the job! Even today, he still holds a deep, unwavering love for all food.

Topaz is the definition of a 100% proud boy. He is patient, incredibly reliable, and has an absolute heart of gold that never fails to make me smile. Whether we’re out and about or just relaxing at home, he is an absolute joy. He loves travelling in the motorhome and camping, always ready for the next adventure.

He holds his Canine Good Citizen title and competes in Rally O Advanced, showing just how bright he is - he's always anticipating my next move and eager to please. Beneath that clever working brain, though, he’s a bit of a total do**us who loves cuddles more than anything. And his absolute favourite pastime? Dismantling knots! Give him a rope or a knotted piece of fabric, and he is a happy boy.

Watching him grow from that tiny puppy into the magnificent adult he is today has been such an incredible delight. He is simply an awesome boy through and through.

🖤 Inside the Foyer: Bijou 🖤

“When a small pair of paws crossed our threshold, and our home was forever transformed.”

Nearly nine years ago, Mum and I set off on a special road trip to the South Island to collect a very precious little bundle. From the moment she stepped into our lives, her name said it all—Bijou, meaning precious little jewel.

She has been the absolute delight of my life ever since.

Was she a little "Teflon Terror" in her puppy days? Absolutely! She kept me on my toes, brought endless laughter into our home, and made sure there was never a dull moment.

Today, she is a mature - well, somewhat mature - nine-year-old girl. Over the years, Bijou has proved herself to be as talented and intelligent as she is sweet:

🖤 Accomplished in Rally Obedience

🖤 Passed her Canine Good Citizen certification

🖤 Served as a comforting St. John Therapy Dog

🖤 Raised a beautiful litter

🖤 Above all, a cherished, irreplaceable family member

Has she ever truly settled down? Not a bit! She still holds a boundless zest for life, full of sudden zoomies, playful energy, and a spirited, sharp mind that keeps life bright.

Bijou is a true treasure, the heart of our household, and the matriarch who first opened the door to everything we do today.

🖤 The Front Porch - Welcoming Dolly 🖤

There is an old saying that the best things in life take time, grit, and a little bit of faith. Today, we are incredibly proud to officially introduce the beautiful beginning of Arete Standard Poodles: Aust & NZ Champion Keacia River of Dreams—affectionately known to us as Dolly.

Finding the right Standard Poodle for the show ring was a dedicated four-year journey filled with ups and downs. After months of anticipation, Dolly finally made her exciting trans-Tasman leap from Australia to New Zealand in December 2025 to join our family.

Dolly’s accolades speak for themselves, but her journey is one of pure heart. She was infinitely patient with me as I mastered show coat care, entered the ring for the first time, and made her up to a New Zealand Champion. This milestone belongs to an incredible village of people who guided us on show days, and the unwavering mentorship of her breeder, Kate Macklin at Keacia Poodles Australia.

At home, Dolly runs the household with absolute grace. She is a beautiful soul inside and out, equally in her element during rugged outdoor adventures as she is lounging at home. A total cuddle enthusiast in the evening, she has become wonderful friends with both Bijou and Topaz. She and our boy Topaz truly are like two little peas in a pod.

Dolly represents the very inception of Arete—built on patience, elite standards, and a smart, classy vision for the future. Thank you for walking up to our front porch and joining us on this beautiful journey.

The Arete Front Porch | Meet the Foundation 🐩

Every great empire has a spectacular foundation. Around here, ours prefer to curl up on the couch!

Now that we’ve introduced the philosophy behind 'Arete'—the Greek concept of excellence and virtue—we want to invite you onto our front porch to meet the two who truly started it all: our resident companions, Bijou and her son, Topaz.

While Bijou and Topaz are strictly our cherished family pets and won't be part of our future breeding programme, they are the living, breathing heart of our home. They are our daily masterclass in what a Standard Poodle should be: brilliant, fiercely loyal, intuitive, and elegantly goofy.

Whether they are earning Rally Obedience titles, working as a certified St John support dog, or sporting short, practical clips for everyday adventures, these two set the ultimate standard for our future. We are breeding for intelligent, capable, and beautifully balanced companions—built for the couch, the sports ring, and everything in between.

To build a kennel with true integrity, is to understand the soul of the breed. For us, excellence isn't just about a flawless structure; it’s about brains, versatility, and a rock-solid temperament.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be opening the doors to show you what goes on behind the scenes at Arete, and how we plan to protect and preserve this incredible breed right here in New Zealand. Welcome to the journey! 🌿🇳🇿

Officially registered with Dogs NZ, our prefix represents a lifelong passion for the preservation, protection, and advancement of the majestic Standard Poodle. At Arete, structural balance, sound temperament, and comprehensive health clearances are our non-negotiable standards.
Our breeding program is built upon the belief that ethical breeding is an architectural pursuit—blending world-class conformation lines with verified health equity.
