Did you know Totally Vets offer a service to our farming clients to vaccinate working dogs on farm. 🐶💉

It can be hard to find time to bring your dogs into the clinic to see the vet, so we can bring the vet to you.

The service includes:

• General health check, which includes a physical exam
• Puppy and adult vaccines - different options available depending on the cover required. A discussion will be had at the time
• Vet advice for any concerns found on exam - E.g. weight/diet, lumps, lameness/arthritis or any other previously diagnosed conditions
• This service also includes cats on request

There are dog runs organised throughout the year, based on when the vaccines are due. Once you have joined a run, we will call each time your dogs are due to book them in for a vaccine run.

If you have any queries, contact the clinic on 06 323 6161 and we will be happy to help!

A big congrats to the Cousins family and the whole team at Hiamoe Farm! A well-deserved win! 👏🥳

A huge congratulations to the Cousins family of Hiamoe Farm in Feilding who have been named Regional Supreme Winners at the Horizons Ballance Farm Environment Awards in Palmerston North this evening.

Hiamoe Farm is owned by John and Toos Cousins, who manage the farm with their three sons – Edmund, Guido, and Julius. The farming business includes sheep breeding and finishing, bull finishing and dairy grazing. They also grow maize silage for a neighbouring dairy farm, crops for stock feed and produce peas.

The family has a strong focus on caring for the land, combined with excellent stock management and performance. The judges commended their focus on profitability, structured succession planning, education and industry involvement, through which Hiamoe Farm has created a model for sustainable farm leadership.

In awarding the Regional Supreme Award, judges observed that through innovation, precision management and a thorough understanding of livestock nutrition and health, the Cousins family has created a high-performing, efficient farming operation that showcases their visionary approach to land stewardship.

Do you know enough about facial eczema?

Facial eczema is caused by a toxin that is produced by spores of a fungus. This toxin affects the liver and becomes a problem in pasture when the grass temperatures are 12 degrees or higher, humidity is 80% or greater and there is heavy dew or 3-4mm of rain.

As a company we test facial eczema spores weekly in different areas around our clinics, this helps us determine where the areas of concern are. You can view our bulletin here: https://totallyvets.co.nz/facial-eczema-risk-bulletin/

Best practice is to test the grass on your property to assess the risk on each of your paddocks and to help plan your prevention strategy.

Facial Eczema spore counts are typically higher in:
• Shaded/sheltered paddocks
• Tree lines
• North facing paddocks

Symptoms in animals include:
• Seeking shade
• Peeling of skin, predominately in white coats
• Condition loss
• Swollen drooping ears
• Restlessness, shaking of the head, or scratching of affected areas
• Jaundice
• Death

Facial eczema prevention options:
• Zinc Bolus, getting the time right is crucial
• Spray the pasture with a fungicide to kill the fungus.
• Graze known safe paddocks and don't allow animals to graze short pasture

For more information see here: https://totallyvets.co.nz/facial-eczema-all-you-need-to-know/

There is little that can be done if animals develop facial eczema, therefore prevention is critical. Have a chat to our team for further advice.

Current weather conditions make it time to be on the lookout for barber’s pole worm. ⚠️🪱

Having some knowledge of this parasite (Haemonchus contortus), and its debilitating effect on sheep mobs, is vital to combatting the disease.

Sheep, particularly lambs, need to be observed for classical anaemia signs like lethargy and paleness of the eyes and gums. Other signs in affected animals may be ill-thrift, rapid shallow breathing, animals lagging at the end of the mob and collapsed or dead animals.

Correct timing of drenching and weather observation are important management factors. Barber’s pole is easy to kill but given its short reproductive cycle sheep can become reinfected quickly. Please contact us for further advice on what is suitable for your situation.

Welcome to our Facial Eczema Spore Count Bulletin for 2025 - this pinned post will be updated each week, so please revisit to see what the spore count is in your area.

For the week ended 28/03/25 the facial eczema risk rating is HIGH for Feilding areas and HIGH Awapuni areas.

Please read our full bulletin here:https://totallyvets.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Facial-Eczema-Spore-Count-Bulletin-28-March-2025.pdf

For advice on facial eczema prevention see here: https://totallyvets.co.nz/facial-eczema-all-you-need-to.../

Spore counts can vary greatly between properties and even between paddocks. We encourage farmers to bring in grass samples to get a more accurate idea of the facial eczema risk on their own property. Contact us if you would like more information on bringing in your own samples for testing.

FREE CHRISTMAS HAM!! 🤩

When you purchase a 5L Boss® PO, 7.5L Turbo® PO, 5L Turbo® PO or Turbo® Triple + Tape 20L.

Turbo® PO and Boss® PO covers cattle over 100kg for gastrointestinal worms, lungworm, and biting and sucking lice.

A drench containing Levamisole is best for young cattle under 12 months to target Cooperia oncophora (an internal roundworm that lives in the small intestine), this is most commonly found in this age group and can cause a decrease in growth rates if not treated. Our Boss PO & turbo cattle PO contain this active ingredient, which is why it is highly recommended for farmers with young cattle.

Turbo® Triple Tape covers lambs over 20kg for gastrointestinal worms, lungworm and tapeworm. Turbo® Triple Tape contains eprinomectin in an oral formulation for the first time in sheep.

Drenching animals in their first year of life helps to remove the worms while they are still building immunity against them. Drench resistance is starting to become a big issue within the farming industry. So, using the right drenches and only when it is necessary is key to slowing down drench resistance.

Free hams are only available while stocks last so get in quick!

If you need any advice on drench, stop in and talk to our wonderful reception staff.

Rotavirus Calf Scours ⚠️💩

We are finding a big jump in the number of calves with rotavirus calf scours this month. If your calves are scouring and/or lethargic bring some poo in and get it tested. The quicker a diagnosis is made the quicker treatment can be initiated and the better the outcome.

For any calf health enquires please don't hesitate to talk to your vet.
