🐾 Lumps & Bumps Series: Histiocytoma
A small, pink, button-like lump that appears quickly can be alarming — but it may be a histiocytoma.
What is it?
A histiocytoma is a common benign skin lump, often seen in younger dogs.
What causes it?
It develops from skin immune cells and can grow rapidly.
How is it treated?
Many shrink and disappear on their own over a few months. Some may need removal if irritated.
💚 These often look worse than they are, but should still be checked.

The best way to find out what your pet’s lump is, is to get them checked by the vet and tested if needed. We can do fine needle samples of most lumps while your pet is awake and check them under the microscope or if needed, send the slide away for testing. Certain lumps may need a larger biopsy or removal under sedation or anaesthetic to get a diagnosis. Faster growing lumps are more of a concern, but all lumps should be checked by your vet and monitored.

What causes it?

How is it treated?
Treatment may include draining the abscess, cleaning the area, pain relief, and antibiotics.

🐾 Lumps & Bumps Series: Foreign Body Lumps
A lump that appears suddenly after a grass seed, splinter or wound may be a foreign body reaction.
What is it?
This happens when something gets under the skin and the body reacts.
What causes it?
Grass seeds, splinters, thorns, or other material trapped under the skin.
How is it treated?
The foreign material usually needs to be removed and antibiotics may be needed.
💚 These can be uncomfortable and often won’t settle without treatment.

Sudden swelling, especially on the ear flap? It may be a haematoma.
What is it?
A haematoma is a pocket of blood under the skin.
What causes it?
Usually from trauma, scratching, shaking the head, or injury.
How is it treated?
Treatment may include draining, surgery, and treating the underlying cause (such as an ear infection).

If you gave this beautiful rosella to one of our vets yesterday evening in Whakatane, can you let us know where you found him. He was showing neurological signs and couldn't stand up, but after some TLC, he is improving and on the road to recovery, but we want to know if he was a pet or wild and where he can be released once he is well.
