Spot On Time | Spot | 7yo Bay Gelding | By Time Test | 162cm
If you’re looking for an OTTB who has already had plenty of exposure to life as a sporthorse, Spot could be a very easy one to pick up and carry on with.
Spot arrived with us just over a week ago and passed his incoming vet check. He retired from racing earlier this year and has been out of work since May, so we’ve started quietly bringing him back into work with two rides under saddle so far.
And naturally, both rides happened in true Canterbury fashion one in fairly horrendous weather and the second in gale force winds. 😂🌬️
The big advantage with Spot is that throughout his racing career, his pre trainer gave him extensive sporthorse mileage alongside his race training. He’s not coming into this completely green to life outside of racing, and it shows.
His trainer describes him simply as an “easy ride”, with no issues reported riding alone, in company, mounting or through his general walk, trot and canter work.
Under saddle with us, he has been straightforward and sensible. He’s a slightly funny one to describe I wouldn't call him a traditional kick along, but you do need to encourage him forward to get him working into a bit more pace and rhythm. At the same time, he can have a little look at things around him, so he isn't completely asleep at the wheel either! Looky, yes. Spooky, no.
Considering he's only just coming back into work after a few months off, I think we'll see him naturally become more forward and consistent again with regular work.
We popped a little cross bar during his second ride and he went over it with absolute ease and no fuss. 🌟
On the ground, his trainer reports no issues catching, leading, tying, for the farrier, oral medication or loading/travelling on either a truck or float. We've also found him straightforward to have around here.
Spot retired with a quarter crack which has now grown out and been re-shod, and he subsequently passed his incoming vet check with us.
Overall, I think Spot will really suit someone wanting a horse that has had a great head start on his transition into sporthorse life. He's sensible, experienced beyond the racetrack and should be a really rewarding horse to get back into consistent work and continue producing.
