Horses can use their eyes independently to look at two different things at the exact same time. This ability affects how they scan their environment and watch for danger.
How the eyes work, monocular vision is when a horse looks to the side, each eye works alone. The left eye sends a view to the right side of the brain, and the right eye sends a different view to the left side of the brain. Binocular vision is when looking straight ahead, the horse uses both eyes together to focus on one single spot. This gives the horse three-dimensional vision and depth perception (the ability to judge how close or far away something is).

Because of how their eyes are placed on their heads, horses can switch between surveying the whole area and focusing closely on an object.
Different jobs for different brain sides, I teach this in every class, with a deepening understanding of the significance to the body and locomotion. Science shows that a horse's left and right eyes actually process feelings differently. The right eye is used to look at normal, everyday objects. The left eye is used to spot potential threats or scary things.

The brain hemisphere and the side of the eye dictate how a horse processes information, a biological concept known as brain lateralization. Because a horse's nervous system is contralateral, visual data from the left eye crosses over to be processed primarily by the right brain hemisphere, and vice versa. Each hemisphere specializes in a completely different survival strategy.

The left eye and right hemisphere of the equine brain is wired to handle intense emotions, flight responses, and novelty. The right eye and left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for logic, routine, and evaluation.

While the two halves of a horse's brain are connected and share information, the emotional processing remains highly independent. This separation explains common horse behaviors like the one sided spook where a horse may calmly walk past an object with its right eye (processed logically by the left brain). However, when turning around, that same object enters the left eye (processed as a potential threat by the right brain), causing the horse to suddenly spook.

This information correlates perfectly with the core scientific arguments in The Master and His Emissary by Dr. Iain McGilchrist.
In the first chapter of his book, McGilchrist directly references evolutionary biology and animal behavior(including birds and mammals like horses) to explain why the vertebrate brain evolved to be divided into two separate hemispheres in the first place. The behavior of the horse is a living, breathing demonstration of the exact evolutionary pressure McGilchrist describes.

The two types of attention. McGilchrist argues that the brain is not divided because it does different things, but because it needs to pay two different types of attention to the world at the exact same time. The left hemisphere (right eye / analytical) McGilchrist states the left brain provides narrow, focused, utilitarian attention. In the wild, an animal needs this to isolate a specific piece of food, manipulate a tool, or step carefully on stable ground. This matches the horse using its right eye to calmly analyze, categorize, and evaluate familiar, routine objects.

The right hemisphere (left eye / surveillance) McGilchrist explains that the right brain provides a broad, global, uncommitted alertness to the entire environment. It is designed to look for the unexpected, detect threats, and manage deep survival emotions like fear. This is exactly why a horse uses its left eye to monitor its surroundings for predators and why it processes scary, novel objects with that side.
"The Emissary" versus "The Master" in equine behavior. The metaphor of the book's title applies directly to how a horse functions.

The emissary (left brain) handles the technical details, the known, and the small scale tasks (like chewing grass or following a known arena routine). The master (right brain) holds the big picture, handles relationships, and maintains ultimate veto power over behavior via the flight response if a threat is detected.

From a vestibular and survival point of view having the left eye physically positioned more forward, higher, and more prominent serves as a massive biomechanical and neurological advantage for a prey animal.

This brain asymmetry is at the heart of the mammalian pattern; it dictates all reflexive nervous system communication, posture and somatic motion possibilities.

One subject of growing concern is the method and philosophy surrounding castration in the equine male.

As human technology evolves, we constantly seek easier and more efficient ways to perform necessary procedures, yet efficiency can sometimes come at the expense of biological integrity and animal welfare.

Castration is a necessary procedure within the domesticated world, but like any surgical intervention, it requires appropriate pain management, sterile technique, and an understanding of anatomy, physiology, and healing. Every living being experiences pain and physiological stress during alteration, and proper support is essential for recovery.

As an Equine Osteopath, I consider all body systems as one integrated whole. Mobility, in every sense, equals life and wellness. When mobility or transportation within the body is obstructed, dysfunction follows, affecting not only a single organ but the entire organism. Chronic stress, for example, keeps the adrenal glands in a state of overactivity, disrupting cortisol regulation and leading to systemic imbalance. When the body cannot maintain homeostasis, dysfunction and disease inevitably arise.

Castration is typically performed by a veterinarian. The animal is sedated, local anesthesia is administered, and the area is cleaned and prepared. The veterinarian then makes an incision through the sc***um and fascial layers to expose the testicle and epididymis.

A clamp (emasculator) is placed across the blood vessels and vas deferens, ligatures are applied to secure hemostasis, and the testicle is removed by scalpel. In many cases, the wound is left open for drainage and natural healing.

This standard method, while invasive, follows anatomical principles and allows the body to process and recover through its natural mechanisms of repair.

In recent years, a method has emerged, marketed as a โ€œfast, bloodless, and simpleโ€ alternative. It promises minimal bleeding, minimal downtime, and quick recovery.

The procedure follows the same steps up to the point of clamping, but instead of using a manual emasculator, a motorized drill with a specialized clamp is attached. The clamp encircles the testicle, and when the drill is activated, the testicle and epididymis are twisted until they separate.

While it may appear efficient and tidy from the outside, this violent rotational motion introduces extreme strain and trauma to surrounding anatomical structures. What appears to be an easy and bloodless solution, in fact, carries profound and devastating consequences for the animal.

To understand these implications, we must revisit anatomy.

The testicles begin their development near the kidneys, which rest upon the peritoneum, a fascial membrane supporting the abdominal organs. During development, the testicles descend through two layers of fascia into the sc***um, pulling the vas deferens along behind them. The vas deferens runs over the ureter, which connects the kidney to the bladder.

This means the testicular structures are not isolated. They are intricately connected to the kidneys, bladder, and the fascial system that unites the entire body. Any violent twisting or excessive strain at this point can extend far beyond the sc***um, affecting the ureter, peritoneum, and internal organ function.

Osteopathically, the sudden trauma of mechanical twisting causes immediate fascial and neurological repercussions. The vas deferens and ureter are particularly vulnerable, and strain in this area lead to local and systemic dysfunctions, from organ adhesion formation to chronic pain and immobility.

When fascial tissues are damaged or strained, the body responds by laying down collagen fibers in the direction of stress, creating scar tissue. This process reduces elasticity, decreases circulation, and alters mobility in nearby organs and musculoskeletal structures.

These effects are not localized. Due to the interconnected nature of the fascial system, dysfunction in the pelvic or inguinal region can cascade through the Superficial Ventral Line (SVL), a myofascial kinetic chain extending from the hind limbs to the jaw.

This means that post-castration restrictions can manifest as:

โ€ข Stifle and hock pain
โ€ข Pelvic and sacral restrictions
โ€ข Lumbar and sacroiliac immobility
โ€ข TMJ tension and dental malocclusions
โ€ข Compensatory postural changes and behavioral issues

Neurologically, trauma in this region creates a persistent nociceptive (pain) signal through the spinal segments innervating the pelvic organs. Over time, this constant neural input affects not just the original lesion but the entire segmentโ€™s metamere, influencing muscle tone, blood flow, organ function, and even skin sensitivity. This is how a local fascial lesion can evolve into systemic dysfunction.

In my osteopathic practice, I have observed a range of compensatory and decompensatory patterns in horses castrated via the motorized drill technique, including (but not limited to):
โ€ข Chronic stifle and hock pain
โ€ข Pelvic and sacral-iliac restrictions
โ€ข Urinary tract dysfunction and infections
โ€ข Spondylolisthesis and vertebral immobility
โ€ข Diaphragmatic restriction and respiratory difficulty
โ€ข Blood pressure irregularities
โ€ข Digestive disturbances
โ€ข Behavioral changes such as bucking, hypersensitivity, or resistance to touch

In severe cases, trauma to internal organs has resulted in irreversible kidney or bladder damage, or fatal complications such as evisceration, where intestines protrude through the incision due to excessive internal strain.

No living being should have delicate and sensitive structures violently twisted or severed by a motorized tool. Beyond the immediate pain and physical damage, the osteopathic and physiological consequences are vast and long-lasting.

Understanding anatomy, fascia, and neurophysiology reveals how deeply such procedures can impact the entire organism, often manifesting as lifelong dysfunction.

My hope in sharing this is to raise awareness. When faced with a practitioner presenting a motorized drill as a โ€œquick and easyโ€ castration method, please request a traditional, humane, and anatomically respectful approach. The long-term health and wellbeing of your animal depend on it.

January Update Reel.. Busy month with some complex cases. Thanks to all clients.

Rhino, an 8yr TB. Was 'manic', reactive rather than thinking, hard to handle, tricky to ride as would dive off to the side. Has had 6 treatments, one called 'Hidden Dragons', dealing with his internal angst. He has completely changed in demeanor and attitude, now calm and perfect to ride. Won his first race easily. It's never too late to change a horse around.
