Tikiri Trust Shelter for abandoned Dogs and Cats in Sri Lanka
Contact 0094-777426229

A trust has been set up, called Tikiri-Trust named after one of our dogs, to own the property, where we have been living on rent earlier. In 2004 this was just a private residence of Padma, who is now our chair-person and managing trustee, and she had only three dogs and one kitten, and never wanted more than that because she wanted to have time to work on the streets, catching the strays to get t

hem sterilized and to treat them when they are sick, she still does that even now after the home-front has grown, but has less time available for this now because it is difficult for her to ignore the plight of the little pups being thrown onto the road and so we keep taking them in, hoping to re-home them, but some just don’t get adopted and then they grow up here and become permanent residents. Also some old and handicapped dogs have been finding a haven here to live out their lives. Besides the 150 plus dogs living inside the premises, 10 more are outside the gate arriving in time for breakfast and dinner. Every weekend, when the vet comes, 15 dogs or more from various places are here to be sterilized and some spend a few days for aftercare. Among the 50 cats in residence at the moment, 32 are oldies, they have been here for a long time, are used to the dogs and we have no plans to re-home them because adult cats do not adjust easily to a new environment, but we have kittens of various sizes, which we want to give for adoption soon before they get too big. From the adult cats, which are here some of them have certain handicaps, who have to live in enclosed areas and who could be given for adoption under certain circumstances… please consider to adopt one of them or help them by donating for a larger cat-garden, so that at least they can have more space outside the house since it is not possible to let them out into the garden. In spite of many sterilization-campaigns being carried out by us and by other organizations , dogs are still being abandoned, therefore we need places, where such dogs can find refuge and it’s a great blessing that this property has been donated to the Tikiri Trust. However the property has to be maintained and the inmates need to be fed and cared for, for which the Trust needs regular income. As right now the day-to-day upkeep of the shelter has to be secured first, it may be too early to talk about future-plans. However it would be very useful to purchase another piece of land adjoining this property for a quarantine-facility and to space out the animals, as with 200 animals on 120 perch some are living under stress, which we would like to relief as soon as possible. For more information feel free to contact us by phone or e-mail or come for a visit anytime.

Trigger warning ⚠️ Eva being viciously mauled by unruly puppies 🙈😹

A couple of weekends ago an elderly man arrived at our sterilisation Sunday clinic. He could hardly walk, talk or see, yet had still made the trip to bring a mum and her six pups that he knew he was unable to care for. We could see it, this man could hardly care for himself. 💔

Despite having no space or money, we had to take these dogs in.

They are doing well, and mum is an absolute sweetheart, but seven new mouths to feed is a huge hit on our finances, not to mention vaccinations and sterilisations when they are old enough.

We are looking for adopters or sponsors for this little family.

If you would like to sponsor or adopt mum or one of her pups please get in touch. Alternatively, to make a one-off donation please visit our website - tikiritrust.com

TWO bits of good news, and one piece of bad news. 🗞️

A few months back you rallied to help us buy Nexgard to help hundreds of dogs like this one.

The good news is lots of dogs are feeling much better after your kind donations helped us fund their skin treatments. The bad news is we’ve used it all and need to get more!

The second piece of good news is that of our wonderful supporters has created a website to make donating easier than ever.

Please visit tikiritrust.com to help us support both the shelter dogs and those we see along the road who need help feeling a little more comfortable. ❤️

Mark your donation ‘skin treatments’ so we know what it’s for!

Thank you. 🙏

Meet Bisomenike, one of Eva’s angels. ✨

In 1987 after the greatest loss Eva had experienced, she and Peter moved into a village called Ingurugolla near Kandy.
They began building life again from scratch in an old bungalow, which needed total renovation, and a garden, which was a jungle.

It was hard at times, Eva was cooking with firewood, bringing water from a spring.

Then one day Bisomenike stood in front of Eva and Peter’s house with her two year old son Laxman and asked if they needed help. Eva wondered if she could afford to pay her as they had very little money, but she didn’t ask much and was of great help.

Today, Bisomenike helps in a different way. For the last 20 years she has organised spay clinics in all the villages around her house and has adopted a lot of stray dogs. Now there are hardly any more dogs or cats to be spayed in her area, but if occasionally someone dumps an animal in the neighborhood she gets her son Laxman to bring them to our Sunday clinic in his tuk tuk.

Recently she brought three puppies who were six-months-old and had been dumped at her house. Mum has also been sterilised.

There is one thing that ensures we can carry out these vital clinics. YOU! 👈

They rely on funding we don’t have, and we need your support now more than ever.

Please help us, and kind hearted locals like Bisomenike, to continue transforming animals’ lives for the better.

When this puppy arrived we couldn’t touch him. He’d been fending for himself on the streets and was absolutely terrified. 💔

Less than 24 hours later we have worked to build some trust, and he knows he’s safe here.

Tikiri Trust is a refuge where animals are given the time to go at their own pace. We show them the love and respect they usually have never experienced, and they can finally relax, often for the first time in their lives.

Please help us continue our life-changing work.
