Can a smartphone actually read a cat's heart?

Six-lead smartphone ECGs (smECG) were already validated in dogs — but nobody had tested them in cats until now. Cats are small, fast-hearted, and famously hard to keep still for a standard ECG, which is exactly why an easier method matters most for them.

In this newest published study, 40 cats each underwent simultaneous recordings with a standard ECG and a six-lead smECG. Researchers compared heart rate and rhythm, P- and R-wave amplitude, wave and interval durations, and the QRS mean electrical axis — then used Bland-Altman plots and Cohen's kappa to see whether the two methods actually agreed.
