Dog training myths — BUSTED.

❌ "They will grow out of it in time." Nope — they need your guidance.
❌ "Old dogs can't learn new tricks." Wrong — any age can learn!
❌ "Showing them who's Boss works best." Actually, it builds fear, not trust.

Great training starts with a proactive, clear plan — and I can help you build one.

Here's a QUICK WIN you can implement right away with your dog. Is your dog getting enough sleep? Adult dogs need around 14–16 hours of sleep a day. A well-rested dog thinks more clearly, making training so much easier. Don't overlook this simple yet effective strategy!

👉 New research backs this up — dogs with better sleep show stronger learning and memory retention. Their findings also suggest that suboptimal sleep may be linked to poorer overall welfare in dogs, with strong associations to poor psychological health.

Training your dog isn't about dominance or quick fixes — it's about understanding the basics of animal behaviour, meeting their genetic needs, and showing up with an action plan for your training goals. Small changes lead to BIG transformations.

If you were to ask me What is one of the Biggest Mistakes many new puppy owners make?

The answer has to be Too much freedom, too soon.

I get it. You got the puppy to be a member of the family. Of course you want them involved in your day to day. However, here's the thing. A young puppy doesn’t need full access to the whole house just yet. They are still adjusting to their new life. In fact, that’s often where many unwanted habits begin, chewing, toilet accidents, stealing shoes, barking at windows, or learning to be switched “on” all day long.

That’s why I always encourage every puppy owner to create what we call a "Puppy Bedroom".

A safe, calm space where your puppy can rest, settle, switch off, and learn how to be alone for short periods without stress.

Not as punishment. Not because they’ve done something wrong.

But because good management helps prevent problems before they start.

Puppies, like young children, need guidance, routine, and plenty of sleep. Giving them a space of their own helps them feel secure while also making life much easier for the humans raising them.

Good puppy training isn’t just about SIT, GIVE PAW, or where to TOILET.

It’s about setting puppies up to succeed from the very beginning and become manageable, trainable dogs.

That’s exactly what we focus on in our Puppy Pre-School, early training, socialisation, confidence building, and practical everyday guidance to help you raise a calm, happy family dog.

Our next Puppy School begins Friday 29th May in Collooney, Co. Sligo. 4 Spots remaining!

If you’re feeling fed up with your dog lately, you are definitely not alone in that.

Sometimes living with a dog can feel exhausting.

The pulling on walks. The not listening. The jumping up. The constant feeling that you’re repeating yourself over and over again to no avail.

Here’s a little secret we want to share with you:

Struggling with your dog does not mean you’ve failed them.

Most dogs haven’t been taught how to succeed in the situations we put them in. And most dogs owners were never shown how dogs actually learn in the first place.

Training isn’t about becoming stricter, louder, or more controlling.

Often, it’s about slowing things down, making things clearer, and helping both ends of the lead understand each other better.

Progress rarely happens all at once. It happens through small wins repeated consistently.

And sometimes, the best thing you can do is stop trying to figure it all out alone.

That’s exactly why we run our GROUP CLASSES, to support owners in a practical, encouraging environment with real guidance, real training, and real-life skills that make everyday life easier.

Our next classes begin May 29th in the evenings in Collooney, Co. Sligo. Now open for enrollment!

My Phone Wallpaper .... A cherished moment in time with my Best Friend. When I miss him, I fondly look at it and feel less alone. When I feel his absence, I can remember the day, moment and adventures we had when this photo was taken. When I wish he was still here, I remember he has never left my heart. Love you buddy xx This year without you has been the hardest in my life. But I push on, because you taught me to keep my head up, and my attention focused on the task at hand. You taught me that happiness is being with family. You taught me to never give up and go get what I want.

I take you everywhere with me ❤️ just like old times x

People often ask me, “Will I have to be constantly giving my dog treats.”

My answer to that is No, but here’s the thing … we’ve made the word “treat” sound like dirty like bribery, when really, it’s just food.

And food matters to dogs.

If a dog repeats a behaviour and something good happens afterwards, that behaviour becomes more likely to happen again. That’s how learning works, for dogs and us humans alike. It's called Positive Reinforcement (+R).

You want to use food in your dog's training because it’s clear, instant, and meaningful to the dog. It helps them understand: “Yes. I like that! Please do that again.”

Over time, the behaviour itself becomes more familiar and more reliable. The goal isn’t to carry food forever. The goal is to help your dog learn faster, with more clarity and less frustration for everyone involved.

Used properly, food isn’t bribery. It’s simply a communication device.

If you’d like to learn more about how we use practical, reward-based training in everyday life, our NEXT GROUP CLASSES begin on May 29th in the evenings at Collooney, Co. Sligo. Now enrolling.
