NEWS UPDATE: After more than 5 months of closure following storm damage, we are delighted to announce that as of Friday 4th July 2025, the Queen Maeve Trail on Knocknarea, Co. Sligo is fully reopened. After an extensive restoration project involving Sligo County Council, Coillte and Love’s Contractors, several months of work has been completed and the public can walk the entire trail once again.

As you can see from our photos, the boardwalk on the Strandhill side, which had been extensively damaged by Storm Eowyn, has now been fully repaired. Indeed, the Before and After photos could hardly be more different, a contrast between timbers that had been either fully or partially destroyed and those that have been relaid and in places widened to improve the trail.

After Storm Eowyn brought down many trees along the boardwalk, that section of the trail was fully closed while the remainder of the walk was restored. An additional challenge was that many other forest areas in Sligo had also been damaged, which meant that staff and contractors had to work on multiple sites, which were then gradually reopened to the public over time. However, the Queen Maeve Trail was one of the most significantly damaged of all of Sligo’s woodland walks. On top of that, the terrain and gradient of the walk meant that it was also one of the most challenging operations. Not only had trees fallen across the boardwalk, their roots had completely dug up some of the structure itself and these sections had to be entirely rebuilt or replaced.

Further challenges included getting machinery to the impacted locations. But once the passage to the site was established, the contractors were able to work together, firstly clearing the fallen trees and then effecting repairs, which have now been largely completed. And while the full 8km of Queen Maeve Trail has now fully reopened, we advise the public that ongoing maintenance works will remain in place, so please adhere to any temporary signage in place as any remedial works are concluded.

But the really welcome news is that for walkers from Sligo and for our many visitors, we are all delighted that the Queen Maeve Trail, one of Sligo’s most popular walks, has now been opened for all to enjoy. Well done to everyone involved in this difficult repair operation and we would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience while the works were undertaken.

10 Sligo walks just for you ❤️

It's always a good time to get out and reacquaint ourselves with our walks, especially at this time of year when we remind ourselves of our need to stay active. With the best of intentions to get fit, our beautiful coastal walks are a great introduction, being relatively flat and easily accessible.
