Responsible Dog Ownership
-Your Dog Must be Microchipped
Your dog must be Microchipped and the chip registered in your name. Then if the dog strays it can be traced back to you and reunited with you. If you rehome your dog, move house or change your telephone number you must contact the Mircochip provider (e.g. Animark, Fido) so that the registration information can be changed. -Your Dog and Identification
In addition to a microchip your dog must wear identification. A collar with a disc bearing your contact number will help to reunite you with your dog should it stray or get lost. Failure to have identification on your dog can result in an on-the-spot fine issued by a dog warden.
-Your Dog and Vaccinations
Vaccinations will help prevent your dog from picking up diseases such as Parvo Virus. Your dog may need an annual vaccination booster - Ask your Vet for advice.
-Your Dog and Parasites (Worms and Fleas)
Your dog should be treated for Worms and Fleas regularly to keep it free from internal and external parasites - Ask your Vet for advice.
-Your Dog and Puppies
It is important to have your dog Neutered or Spayed to prevent unwanted puppies.
-Your Dog and Fouling
Clean up after your dog if it fouls in a public place.
-Your Dog and a Dog Licence
You must have a current dog licence for your dog. Annual Dog Licence – Post Office €20
Lifetime dog Licence – County Council €140
-Your Dog and Other People
Keep your dog under control at all times and have consideration for others – Children, Elderly, Guide dogs etc.
-Your Dog and Farm Animals
Keep your dog under control to prevent Livestock Worrying. It is good practice to keep your dog on a lead at all times when walking near livestock but it is particularly important during Spring. Even the most trusted dog can become excited, chase sheep and even cause injuries or fatalities. Sheep worrying can also have severe consequences for pregnant ewes such as early labour or still born lambs.
-Your Dog’s Welfare
You must provide fresh water and the right type and amount of food to keep your dog fit and satisfied. You must provide the right type of environment for your dog, including shelter and a comfortable place to rest. If your dog becomes ill or is injured, you must ensure that it is treated as soon as possible. You must ensure that your dog’s coat, nails and teeth are kept in good condition with regular grooming, exercise and the correct diet. You must provide enough space, shelter, exercise and company to ensure your dog is both physically comfortable and mentally content. You must ensure that your treatment of your dog keeps it free of any mental or physical suffering.
