The Hardest Goodbye. This week marks one year since my dear Riley passed over the Rainbow bridge.

I havent spoken about this outside a handful of people. It was the most difficult decision I ever made and the circumstances were just a impossible. At the time I felt extremely lonely as I hadn't heard of many people having gone through this and with the help of many vet and behavioural professionals they guided me through the painful options or lack of options. So if I can help someone with Rileys Story feel less alone making the most horrible decision it is worth sharing.

Her behaviour had changed slightly and I had put it down to adolescent pushing boundaries etc but over a few weeks her behaviour changed she was extremely fearful for no reason and had become guarded to strangers. Unfortunately after two bite incidents one was me which ended me in hospital it became a welfare issue for everyone and for her. Consulting behaviour specialists and a pain assessment(I had hung my hopes on this but it was negative for any issues) my own vet suspected a brain tumour. She had become erratic and dangerous giving no signals of lashing out which caused serious concern . Within a space of 3 weeks my beautiful girl was unrecognisable and I was left with no options but to say good bye. The most gut reaching painful decision I ever made. It wasnt only the pain of saying goodbye or the injury I sustained which was the most difficult but I was also left with ptsd from what had happened and any aggressive dog or dog fight was triggering. Working with and being around dogs became difficult. Time has helped and getting another dog seemed impossible because that trust was broken outside of our own family dogs. Little did I know Lexi and her gentle soul would help heal the wounds and in alot of ways I believe she was sent to me and we rescued each other.

So for anyone having to make a similar difficult decision you are not alone . Since last year I have actually spoken to quiet a few people who have gone through this. It never gets easier even if you know it was the right thing for her . Riley will always hold a special piece of our hearts and never be forgotten.❤️
