Well it’s definitely starting to get cooler, but I am still living under an industrial-sized fan 😅 and today is still forecast to reach 28 degrees 🥵

So Julie and I feel it is still too hot to safely run classes on Thursday evening. The training room will remain very warm and, with very little shade outside, cars may get too hot for dogs to travel home comfortably afterwards. ☀️🚗

Tomorrow is thankfully looking much better, so 1-1 appointments will go ahead as planned. As always though, please check your emails or drop me a message beforehand just in case.

☀️ Phew… hope everyone is coping with this heatwave! Shade, sunglasses 😎 and plenty of water for both humans and dogs are definitely essential right now.

Today’s blog post talks about something I see all the time in training…

Why do we end up repeating:
“Sit… sit… SIT!” 🤭

Usually it’s not because the dog is being stubborn. Dogs don’t generalise well, which means learning a cue in one place doesn’t automatically mean they understand it everywhere else.

Training isn’t about repeating cues louder and louder — it’s about gradually helping dogs succeed in lots of different environments and situations. 🐶

Whilst we are all keeping dogs cool at the moment, there are still loads of opportunities to work on this at home.

For example:
✔️ Can your dog sit while you’re standing?
✔️ Sitting in a chair?
✔️ Facing the other way?
✔️ Sitting on the floor?
✔️ In a different room?

These little changes help dogs truly understand the cue rather than just rehearsing a pattern in one familiar setup.

Although I do love a sunny day, this heatwave is just too hot for classes and 1-1s ☀️🥵

I’ve moved some appointments to earlier times, cancelled others, and sadly our Beginners Scentwork class was cancelled too.

Thankfully, I also work remotely with separation anxiety clients, so not all is lost 🐾💻

I did manage to grab a couple of photos of the very lovely Rosa, an overseas rescue who is doing beautifully 🥰 as per usual totally forgot to take photos of the others 🤭 one day I will get the hang of it.

Please bear with me while I rearrange appointments, and do check your emails before leaving for any sessions 📧

I love teaching scentwork 🤩
Honestly, the dogs and handlers impress me every single week.

These teams are now on Week 3 of our Beginners Course, and this week we introduced:
👃 Blind searches
🐾 Building indications
🔍 Search handling skills

They all did brilliantly! The dogs are loving the class, and it’s fantastic watching the handlers & dogs grow in confidence, teamwork and of course… super sniffing skills 🤩🐶
