It's unfortunately grass seed season and we are seeing a lot of cases at the moment (This is a photo of a grass seed removed from a dog's ear last week).
Here are few tips to help prevent grass seeds.
To protect your dog from grass seeds, avoid walking in long, dry grass during the late spring and summer.
Thoroughly inspect your dog's paws, armpits, face, groin, and ears after every walk.
Keep their coat brushed and the fur around their toes and ears neatly trimmed to stop seeds from catching.
If you find a grass seed sitting on the surface of the fur, brush it away.
However, if a seed has already penetrated the skin, shows signs of redness, or if your dog is suddenly limping, chewing at an area, shaking its head, or sneezing continuously, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
Call the vet immediately for an appointment, as embedded seeds can travel deep into the body.
