💚 To continue celebrating Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month, we sat down with one of our senior nurses, Becky (senior in role — not in life 😅), to chat about her experiences as a Veterinary Nurse 💚And as an added cute bonus, a picture of her beautiful cats doing what cats do best 💤
1. What’s changed the most in vet nursing since you started?
🩺 “The level of care we can provide. We now know so much more about the animals we treat thanks to advanced diagnostics, and we’re able to perform more complex surgeries and medical treatments to help improve quality of life.”
2. What’s one case from your career you’ll never forget, and why?
🩺 “A little cat unfortunately got its tail stuck in the mechanism of a reclining sofa! Performing a tail amputation on the client’s living room floor was definitely a first for me. Adapting to the situation helped me gain confidence very quickly! Thankfully, the cat recovered well and went on to live a completely normal life, which made it incredibly rewarding.”
3. What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to student nurses?
🩺 “Always believe in yourself. Remember, you’re still learning, and it’s okay to admit when you don’t know something. No one can know everything!”
4. What’s a part of your job that clients don’t usually see but is vital?
🩺 “Monitoring anaesthetics, assisting with surgical procedures, and performing dental scale and polishes with x-rays. The role is far more varied than people realise. As much as we’d love to cuddle puppies and kittens all day, there’s so much more involved behind the scenes!”
5. After all these years, what still makes you love being a vet nurse?
🩺 “That rewarding feeling of knowing you’ve made a difference to a patient’s — and client’s — life, and helped ease any suffering or pain they may be facing.”
