'I am shocked. Shocked I tell you. Well not that shocked. It's just my face.' We love the colours and shading of the plumage of our juvenile Boobook Owls. We even love their permanently caffeinated wide-eyed expressions πŸ™‚πŸ¦‰

Parliament was in session yesterday morning. The House of Commons. (Common Scops that is πŸ˜†) Perhaps a good representation of our UK House of Commons - half of them asleep and half looking a bit weird. There were another 4 off camera too. 😁

There has finally been a break in the stalemate between our staff about what to name our two cheeky young Mottled Owls! πŸ˜†πŸ˜…

We can now finally, and formally, introduce them by their newly chosen names...

Machu (big sister, on the right) and Picchu (little brother, on the left)! πŸ¦‰πŸ˜Š Named after the historic citadel famous during the Incan empire, one of many South American tribes which - both in ancient history and in more modern times - will have lived alongside these beautiful owls across their natural range in the wild.

There's also a little hidden, double entendre behind these two name choices:

'Machu' also translates to 'old' or 'ancient,' often with reference to a person. Our little female definitely has a bit of an 'old soul' about her πŸ₯°

'Picchu' can be translated to 'peak' or 'mountain,' and our adventurous little male Mottled was flying and soaring to great heights from such an early stage in his development - leaps and bounds ahead of his sweet sister! (who got there in the end! πŸ˜…) 😊

Our second Boobook owlet finally fledged from the nestbox overnight, joining the bolder sibling out on nearby branches through the day. Quite chilled considering how new everything was for them, they even synchronised which leg they stood on when relaxed.πŸ˜ƒ

The bravest of our Boobook owlets fledged the nestbox overnight, while the sibling still looked on from the entrance. I was able to watch the parents split the feeding duties so that the female fed the owlet in the box and the male fed the one out on the branch. So cute and so good to finally breed this species for the first time here (only first time for us, other people have bred them plenty, but still feels good!)

So we've been keeping a bit of a secret, but the secret is slipping out! So meet Bunyip, a young Barking Owl, who is joining our ambassador team. To my knowledge he or she is the first incubator hatched and hand-reared Barking Owl outside Australia. Now 5 and a half weeks old, Bunyip has been meeting visitors in our Meet the Birds presentations and is proving to be a popular and inquisitive (not to mention cute!) member of the team. πŸ˜ƒπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
