A couple of pics from yesterday. First, Rubi the White-faced Owl did a bit of exploring and meeting and greeting, and the second pic is of a Smooth Newt that visitors reported swimming in the Great Grey Owl water dish. While it's not so likely that those birds would eat the newt, it was better relocated to the wildlife pond, under Rubi's supervision. 🙂

Trystan's house guest for the last few days (a Ferruginous Pygmy Owl) has moved back into his own place now that the repair/upgrade to his aviary is finished. The new roof makes things a lot brighter so the keepers can actually see where the wee scamp is when they clean his aviary. He was most bemused when he looked round the aviary. Trystan had moved all the furniture and nestbox too. Breaking and decorating!

Did you know that the bare upper eyelids of the Milky/Verreaux's/Giant Eagle Owl get more pink the warmer the bird gets? It's a way for the bird to cool down in the heat of the day in their home of Africa, while still being able to snooze until night cools things down and the owl hunts. With another short heatwave here in Scotland this week our Milky 'Shelley' had very pink eyelids indeed 🤓

Here is Hosking the Tawny Owl in her prime at the original Scottish Owl Centre in Campbeltown, as well as photos of her as a young owl in training with Rod and daughter Susanna and again with them both 20 years later!

At 23 she's the oldest surviving member of our first flying team and in recent years has enjoyed helping tell the story of our origins. Like us, she's keen to find just the right people to continue our legacy.

We'd like to thank all our followers for all the responses, likes and shares after our previous post. The search is still on for someone with sufficient funds, business experience and above all a genuine desire to promote the welfare of wild and captive-bred owls through public education and collaboration with the international owl conservation community. You'd also get to look after 150 beautiful owls!

Anyone interested in the details of our sale proposal should get in touch via the contact form on our website www.scottishowlcentre.com

Meanwhile, thanks to the last post, we're getting interviewed about our story on BBC Radio Scotland's Out of Doors programme! - watch this space!

Founders and owners of the Scottish Owl Centre, Rod and Niccy Angus have an important announcement: 'As we approach retirement, we're starting to look for the right person or people to take over the ownership and management of the Scottish Owl Centre. It has been a labour of love - for owls and for people - for the past 25 years and we want to ensure our legacy is continued. We're looking for an individual or couple with the vision, energy and resources to maintain and develop our unique blend of accessible inspiring education and serious owl conservation and research. Owl expertise is not necessarily a prerequisite since our expert keepers will keep you right! If any of our wonderful followers and supporters know anyone who might be willing and able to take up the challenge, they should contact us via the form on our website www.scottishowlcentre.com so we can send details of our proposal. The right person is out there somewhere!'

Trystan meeting and greeting with Sequoia the Barred Owl last week. She's in moult so off flying display duties but likes to get out and about in the centre to see what's going on. They both got a surprise though as there was a baby rabbit chomping on grass on the path in front of our Snowy Owl aviary! Of all the species we thought we might breed in the owl centre, rabbits was not on the list! Sequoia couldn't believe her eyes, she'd never seen a rabbit before! It only ran away when Trystan stepped a few feet from it, then it darted under the back gate and out into the park. We think our owls need some kind of talk about what it means to be a bird of prey, clearly the rabbits are mocking them! 🤷🤦🦉🐰

❗Dug, our tiny Burrowing Owl with a mountain of personality, is here with a note for our visitors today (Sat 14th June)❗

The café at Polkemmet, which operates as a separate business, is scheduled to be closed today. This means that there will be no available café facilities within the park.

Customers may wish to bring their own lunches (like Dug, here! 😜🐭) or there are nearby Services, as well as a couple of nearby small towns, which are approx. a 10-15 min drive away from our location.

Our newly arrived Philippine Scops Owl, Otus megalotis, displayed his mega-lotis or 'large-ears' this afternoon. They are of course just feathers as the real ears are on the side of the head behind the eye, like ours. 🤓🦉

While we had our two day 'heatwave' in Scotland, our recently paired MackInder's Eagle Owls declared a truce to sit together in the one square metre of sun in the corner of the aviary, and even the goth melanistic Barn Owl, Jet, came out of his bedroom in wonder at the unusual weather. Don't worry Jet, it'll be cold and gloomy as you like it by the weekend 😛

New arrival! Yesterday we received this wonderful male Philippine Scops Owl, Otus megalotis, from Chester Zoo. Bringing our total to 51 species and sub species of owl at the centre, we'll let him settle in for a few days before moving him to one of the public aviaries. 🦉😃
