✨ Pet of the month – Gracie ✨
We would love to introduce you to Gracie a very lovely 3-year-old Pomeranian.
Gracie was brought into the vets by her owner after they noticed she was having trouble using her hind limb on walks, which resulted in her either holding it up or skipping with it.
A few days later Gracie was admitted for a workup of her lameness, this included an orthopedic exam and radiographs of her hind limb.
Once the exam and the x-rays had been completed, it was clear to the vet that Gracie was suffering from luxating patella.
Luxating patellas unfortunately are quite common in small breed dogs. It is where the kneecap (patella) slips in and out of its normal groove on the thigh bone (femur). This is usually graded from 1-4 where the kneecap is permanently dislocated. Gracie was given a grade of 3-4. This then required surgery to sit the kneecap back in the right position and to prevent it from slipping out again.
Gracie had her surgery, and she was recovering well............. until she unfortunately had a nasty accident in which she broke her Tibia (one of the lower bones in her hind limb) in the same leg she had just operated on. So this required further surgery to stabilise the fracture. Throughout this whole time Gracie has remained such a sweet girl and has taken everything in her stride. Gracie's owners have been amazing and have supported Gracie's recovery by attending weekly physiotherapy sessions and continuing with her rehabilitation at home.
We have chosen Gracie to be our pet of the month as she is a star patient.
🩷 Well done, Gracie 🩷
