The importance of settle training. I often take the boys with me to visit my gramps who isnā€™t as quick on his feet anymore, the last thing we want is for the boys to be darting around the place tripping anyone up. So they have a couple of places at his where they settle.

Iā€™ve touched on this before but itā€™s such an important skill to teach.

Also handy if you love a cafe or the pub šŸ˜‚

This is what our morning looked like, we borrowed Sarahā€™s (Dorset Dog Training) dogs and had an agility lesson. Tomorrow itā€™s obedience.

Being able to have access to a variety of dogs allows us to learn how each breed differs when it comes to their training needs. It is ALOT of fun.

A home visit with the ā€œKing of Terriersā€. She has been ruling the house and causing the owners unnecessary headache with her constant demand barking in the house as well as in their garden.

She also pulls on the lead, can be unpredictable with other dogs on lead and her recall is hit and miss.

Weā€™ve made a game plan and hope to see improvement within the next couple of weeks.

Itā€™s always a pleasure seeing these older ladies for toilet breaks. Who can guess the breeds.

Four things have happened here to make this behaviour a new habit.

ā€¢Stimulus Control: The cue or object (the hay bale) makes him do the trick without me asking.

ā€¢Operant Conditioning: Learning where Meep connects an action with a reward or habit.

ā€¢Classically Conditioned Response: The bale triggers the memory and the urge to jump right away.

ā€¢Habit Formation: The action repeats so much that the brain does it on autopilot.

Makes for great photo opportunities and heart palpitations when he tries to jump off (he has to wait for me to get him down)

A recap on my previous post.

Take a look at the circled area and notice how his skin twitches, this tells me he isnā€™t comfortable through his back and on further inspection later on he turned his head towards me when I touched that area as well as synched himself down.

Dogs have a normal skin twitch that can be seen when palpated but it shouldnā€™t be noticeable when carrying out exercises.

Is your dog in discomfort?!

Here is Meep trying to do an exercise he knows and is perfectly capable of doing. I want him to sit with his front feet fixed on the board and tuck his back legs into a sit. However who can spot on his body what might be hindering his movement?

Your dog may not be doing an exercise or behaviour they know well because they are in discomfort which can lead owners to think they are being stubborn or donā€™t understand but we must look at the dogs as a whole.

notice.

What did you all get up to at the weekend? I went to Paignton show, I borrowed Timmy the IWS pup to get him used to the environment, did a bit of shopping and watched some classes.
