Devon weather has not been kind 😂 cold, hot and rainy at times. We’ve seen resource guarding and dogs that just need more play off lead. Next stop Kent.

One of the crucial elements with changing an unwanted behaviour into a wanted behaviour is timing.

It’s not just what you reward it’s when you reward it.

Dogs learn from the behaviour that immediately precedes the reinforcement. So if we get our timing right, we can shape behaviours very deliberately. Get it wrong, and we can accidentally reinforce something we didn’t mean to.

Take Meep, for example.

I taught him to jump up because I wanted him to jump into my arms. It’s also a really useful behaviour for other sports and activities.

At first, “jumping up” could easily become an unwanted behaviour jumping at people, jumping when excited, jumping without an invitation.

But the behaviour itself isn’t necessarily the problem. It’s about what we reinforce and when we reinforce it.

I’ve been able to put that behaviour on cue and reinforce the version I actually want: “UP” for when I want him jumping into my arms, to go up a bank or the A frame in agility”

That is the beauty of training, we can teach the dog when, where and how that behaviour pays.

And the difference often comes down to a fraction of a second.

Good timing = clear communication.

I had a follow up with this girl yesterday here are what her owners have noticed since my last visit:

•less demand barking
•she’s calmer in the house
•no charging at the fence
•less excitement when guests arrive

And the biggest change has been in her lead walking, she’s able to be more focused on her owner and can walk past triggers that would normally make her lunge. All through making consistent changes.

Great work!

Meep knows a lot of obedience exercises and can do soo many tricks and he can look perfectly trained however he is not an emotionally balanced dog.

Training teaches him what to do. Emotional balance teaches him how to feel and cope.

True training isn’t just about a dog that listens it’s about helping them feel safe, confident, resilient, and able to navigate the world around them. 🐾❤️

A well trained dog and emotionally healthy dog aren’t always the same thing.

Just keep SNIFFING!

The hounds had breakfast in the garden this morning, they are an older pair so struggle with long walks but that doesn’t mean their noses have stopped working.

Listen to that sound, putting their heritage to work by searching for the goods using their ears to hone in on the scent.

When pet sitting I do like to give your pets extra enrichment so they enjoy my stay.
