SORRY FOR THE LONG POST.
We have had 2 customers this week say that their vet has recommended raw for the dogs allergies and to buy from a butcher!!
🥩 Why we don’t recommend buying “raw dog food” from a butcher
A butcher may sell good-quality meat for people, but that does not automatically make it suitable as raw dog food. We cook our meat and as long as the meat reaches the right temperature for long enough, proper cooking should kill off harmful bacteria.
The Food Standards Agency says cooking food at the correct temperature and time kills harmful bacteria, and undercooked food can cause food poisoning.
Proper raw pet food sold through specialist retailers should come from approved pet food manufacturers who follow strict pet food regulations, including microbiological testing for things like Salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae. Raw pet food producers are required to have testing systems in place; ordinary butcher meat is not produced, balanced, labelled or tested in the same way for use as pet food.
There’s also a big difference between:
✅ Complete raw dog food – balanced with meat, bone, offal and nutrients
❌ Butcher mince/meat scraps – often just muscle meat, not balanced, and may be too high or too low in bone/offal/fat
Raw feeding can be brilliant when done properly, but it needs to be safe, balanced and suitable for your dog.
At Wild Tails, we stock trusted raw brands designed specifically for dogs and cats, and we can help you choose the right food for your pet’s age, size, sensitivities and health needs.
