It doesn’t cross my mind, to go onto another dog trainer’s social media pages and criticise what they’re doing, just because I do things differently.
It CERTAINLY never enters my head, to personally and publicly insult that trainer, purely for my own gratification or to throw some red meat to entertain my followers.

I just wanted to tell you some good news: ****** and I met several sheep and lambs on a footpath today (unexpectedly as they had escaped their field) and*****’s instant reaction was to turn back to me and ask me to put his lead on. We walked through them with him hugging my heel and then he actively pulled me away from them without looking back.

I was so pleased as that would never have happened before our training with you and it gives me huge confidence going forward. He had also come back instantly when faced with random deer since then and in general is much more responsive and affectionate in daily life. Also our agility training is going well and we both enjoy it.

I can’t thank you enough for getting us back on track. I’ve learned a very valuable lesson and will never forget it. Thanks again!”

This conference reassured me about the dog training and behaviour industry. I admit, I’ve felt pretty burnt out for a while now, and I know that the same is true of many extremely competent people.

The explosion of a social media reflection of the industry has done more bad than good. The self has been prioritised over the dog. ‘How to be a successful online dog trainer’ has choked the industry integrity. Online presence and flipping fast courses for fast cash have become the norm, with the struggling dog being the springboard to a destination that isn’t focused on helping the dog, rather than helping the dog itself being the destination.

But this International Association of Canine Professionals conference reminded me that ‘social media’ is a fake landscape.

Real dog people are good, kind and supportive people.

There’s been a cloud over the industry for the past 10 years or so. But the people we met here provided nothing but sunshine and laughter. The atmosphere was supportive, interested and friendly. It was happy. And whilst happiness plays second fiddle to hate for an ‘algorithm’, happiness is the most beautiful thing in the real world.

Thankfully, the real world is on this side of the glass!

So, I went to California to the International Association of Canine Professionals as a speaker. That was my expectation - to speak.

However, on the last night, at the fantastic gala dinner event, I was left utterly speechless. Truly, genuinely speechless.

I had absolutely no idea for what the association had in store for me.

But on this night, in the presence of incredibly motivated, equally (if not more) deserving, brilliant and wonderful people, it turned out that (unbeknownst to me), it was my time to receive a recognition of achievement award from the IACP that I could never have imagined.

I have now been inducted into the IACP International Hall of Fame in recognition of my years of work to fight for the rights of dog owners and professionals, to retain the right to be the principal judge when it comes to their right to do what is right for their dogs and other animals.

I am GENUINELY honoured … But I am by no means done!

I will continue to encourage more and more loving, responsible dog owners to recognise and reject the selfish nature of politics and instead choose to fight for what is right for dogs and animals or people affected by those dogs.

I will fight with dog owners to stand up against political proposals to BAN tools or practices which are known and shown to keep dogs and other animals safe from harm.
I will never rest with any policy which puts animals at risk, simply to ‘look virtuous’ or get people to donate money to the cause.

This recognition award has just given myself and my wife the propellant we needed, at just the right time.

An awesome day because my good friend from across the pond is here. Jamie Penrith Take the Lead Dog Training is one of my very favorite dog people in the world, not only for his knowledge but also his passion for dogs.

He’s here presenting at the International Association of Canine Professionals and we got to catch up and take a walk through the West La Shelter Volunteers

We talked a lot about the dogs in the shelter and so much more.

I consider myself lucky to call Jamie a friend!
