Dog training for REAL LIFE!

Does your dog TRULY understand what you are asking them to do?

This is from last year - please watch and see just how pleased with himself he is when he gets it right!!

This takes a LOT of understanding from the dog because the training picture is changed quite dramatically. Also, I had been sending him to a bed in a crate last night (that was the last session). He has to run past and ignore that crate in order to get this right. That’s a tough ask for a dog!

You might remember this beautiful boy?

He’s still fu***ng SMASHING IT!! .. A WHOLE YEAR on and he’s still SMASHING IT!!

What was his problem?

Compulsive spinning - obsessive tail chasing ….

Perfectly healthy dogs like him get fu***ng KILLED for that …. Because people who know no better say it can’t be resolved …. Idiots with letters after their name and an ego far bigger than their ability …

But the only one who can prove better than the people who claim to know better is the dog itself!! The very animal concerned.

I frigging LOVE this boy and I AWLAYS will. I would have him in a heartbeat!!

Thank you and I apologise for having to state the obvious in order to protect my own professional integrity - which is light years beyond that of most I see online - to highlight just how far off the mark the comments are.

There's a simple lesson to be learned here - before banging the keys in angry opposition, ask. It's far easier and wastes far less of everyone's life.

Following on from a post relating to Honey, heeling instead of aggressing, and the value of play as a standalone approach to effectively addressing the aggression, which I posted yesterday .. A video which resulted in a torrent of misunderstanding and misrepresentation.

I hope that both clips when taken together, serve to clear up the totally unnecessary misunderstandings, which a simple DM would have avoided in the first place.

Dog training needs to be realistic.

There’s no point demonstrating something that simply isn’t going to happen in real life.

How many everyday dog owning people are going to GENUINELY break out a tug toy and play some rough and tumble or throw a ball for their dog, just to get it to focus on them instead of kicking off like a megaphone with teeth at any and every dog they pass in the street??

One thing I can promise you about working with me either in person, or through my online programs is that I will not try to push anything that won’t hold up and isn’t achievable in your everyday - REAL life with your dog.

Sheep worrying concerns identified and addressed before they become well rehearsed, because the dog can and will move - fast and suddenly - and nobody is holding back 40-odd kilos of explosive determination with any degree of certainty.

Well done. For asking, listening, doing and repeating!

Spaniels …

They can either drive you to distraction or make you beam from ear to ear!!

The difference between the two is whether you have proper control over your Spaniel, to allow them to fully express themselves to do EXACTLY what they were born to do in the environments they were born to do it - but under full control.

A Spaniel that ‘goes rogue’, ‘self employed’ or worse still, kicks in the ‘after burner’ and turns suddenly deaf on a scent or a bird taking off is an absolute nightmare - if you don’t have the necessary control over that behaviour.

This beauty, is her owner’s first dog. That’s a deep-end lesson with a pocket rocket like her!!

I’m proud to say that her owners have been following my online program guidance and came to meet me today for some additional 1-2-1 advice and direction.

What I can say is that for first time owners - with a dog like her - they are doing AMAZINGLY!!

It was a joy to watch her responsiveness and I allowed myself a pat on the back!

It’s a lovely feeling to meet the people and the dogs I reach in my Skills4Life community, and see how well they have done! 😊

This is Honey, our 18-month-old German Shepherd Malinois mix.

We took her on from a previous home and every step since has been about teaching her one thing: stability and control.
In this video she’s walking right alongside me, loose lead, with fast-moving traffic just feet away — focused, calm, and on task.

It didn’t happen overnight.
Dog training isn’t a quick-fix or a “rabbit out of the hat” trick. It takes time, patience, and consistency.

But here’s the catch: time and consistency only pay off if you’re teaching the right thing.
