Hunter first came to us at 7 months old struggling with reactivity to just about everything — moving and stationary.
After 2 private sessions and a group class, Taylor reported fantastic progress and a completely different outlook moving forward.
One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that reactivity needs years to improve.
Not always.
When owners understand what’s driving the behaviour and have a clear plan to follow, meaningful progress can happen surprisingly quickly.
Every dog is different, but confidence, clarity and consistency go a long way.
Thank you Taylor for the kind words and for trusting us with Hunter’s training journey.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in dog training is expecting reliability before the dog truly understands the behaviour.
A dog may sit perfectly in the kitchen, recall in the garden, or walk nicely down a quiet road.
That doesn’t automatically mean they understand those behaviours in every environment.
Training builds understanding.
Testing exposes weaknesses.
The goal isn’t to avoid challenges altogether. It’s to introduce them progressively so the dog can continue to succeed while learning.
If your dog struggles around distractions, ask yourself:
👉 Have they been taught the skill here yet?
👉 Or am I testing something they only understand elsewhere?
Better training starts with better understanding.

A dog that listens perfectly in your kitchen isn’t necessarily trained for the real world.

One of the biggest mistakes owners make is assuming their dog “knows” a behaviour because they can do it at home. Then they head to the park, woodland, café, or around other dogs and suddenly everything falls apart.

That’s not stubbornness.

Different environments change:
• Arousal levels
• Focus
• Motivation
• Emotional state
• Available distractions

Dogs don’t automatically generalise behaviours well. Reliable training comes from gradually proofing behaviours across different locations, distractions, and levels of difficulty.

If your dog can only perform a behaviour in one environment, they haven’t fully learned it yet.

Train where it’s easy.
Progress where it’s challenging.
Build reliability through consistency.

What environment does your dog struggle in most?

One thing I hear all the time is:

“My dog eventually listens most of the time.”

And honestly, we’ve all been guilty of justifying our dog’s training at some point.

The problem is that we can start measuring success by our dog’s best moments instead of their average ones.

Reliable training isn’t about what your dog does when they feel like it. It’s about what they do when there’s a squirrel, another dog, a smell worth investigating, or something more interesting than you.

Buddy’s off-lead heel didn’t happen because he’s naturally obedient. It happened because we built clarity, consistency and plenty of reinforcement over time.

What training excuse have you caught yourself making? 👇

Not every training session needs to be flashy.

Today included a walk with Pheobie and Gus, followed by some retrieve work with Marti. We’re focusing on a cleaner delivery to hand rather than dropping the dummy on the floor. It might seem like a small detail, but these foundations are what create reliable retrieves later on.

Progress is often built through repetition, consistency and getting the basics right.

Great time out and about with my mate today. so great to be able to have these dogs off lead, free and still have complete control.

The off-switch matters just as much as obedience.
Gus & Pheobie working, then switching off properly.
