Fireworks might be fun for us, but they can be extremely frightening for our pets. 🎆

Last year, we saw a 19% increase in pets needing out-of-hours care during fireworks season.

Loud bangs, bright lights, and sudden noises can cause panic, anxiety, or even lead pets to run away.

Keep them safe this fireworks season by planning ahead by speaking to your vet, staying calm, and prioritising their comfort. 🐾

The beautiful Teddy recently came to our Vets Now Glasgow Hospital after very sadly being attacked by another dog.

After being stabilised by his local vet, Teddy was transferred to our Emergency and Critical Care team in a critical condition. He arrived with a broken jaw and one of his eyes dislocated from its socket, he was incredibly fragile.

Our dedicated team acted swiftly. Orthopaedic specialists carried out complex reconstructive surgery, while our ICU nurses provided intensive, round-the-clock care to support his recovery every step of the way.

Here he is at his 6-week check-up, pictured with our Hospital Relationship Manager, Martin. While Teddy still has a journey ahead of him, his recovery so far has been nothing short of remarkable. We’re incredibly proud of this brave little fighter. ❤️🐾

One of our lovely staff dogs from our Vets Now Manchester Hospital recently had to undergo an exploratory laparotomy to remove some fabric that he had swallowed at home.

This condition is known as Pica: a term used when pets eat non-food items like fabric, socks, rocks, plastic toys, or sticks. While it might seem harmless at first, ingesting foreign objects can be very dangerous and may lead to:

- Severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting and loss of appetite

These items often can’t pass safely through the digestive system, sometimes requiring surgical intervention, much like Hugo.

If you ever notice your pet chewing or swallowing unusual objects, try to keep those items out of reach and monitor them closely. And if your pet suddenly shows any of the symptoms above, don’t wait - make sure to contact your local vet immediately. For emergencies outside normal hours, head to your nearest Vets Now clinic.

Hugo is now home and recovering well from surgery ❤️🐾

With many gorgeous blooms brightening up our homes and gardens, it’s good to know which ones might not be so pet-friendly. 🌷

Even a small amount ingested can cause serious health problems for pets.

Oscar recently came to see our Vets Now Manchester Hospital with ongoing bleeding and complications following a previous urethrostomy, a surgery he had to help relieve blockages caused by painful bladder stones.

After a thorough examination, our vets discovered that Oscar was anaemic and had necrotic (dead) tissue, putting him at serious risk of infection.

Our surgical team acted quickly, performing a scrotal ablation to remove the damaged tissue, and a urethrostomy revision to ensure urine could flow properly and safely.

Oscar is now recovering well with lots of TLC, pain relief, and monitoring from both our team and his loving owners 🐶

Fungi (like wild mushrooms) are dangerous to dogs because many varieties contain toxins that can cause serious harm if ingested. Since it’s challenging to determine which types are safe, we recommend treating any ingestion of wild mushrooms as potentially harmful. 🍄

If your pup does eat one, contact your vet immediately or if out of hours, your nearest Vets Now clinic, so they can provide the right care. ❤️
