On the 22nd August, Melissa one of our Veterinary Nurses is taking on a charity skydive to raise money for Bristol Children’s Hospital, in support of Emma, a strong young girl whose parents work/ed at Penbode Vets. Emma has shown incredible strength and courage, I wanted to do something special to help support her and her family.

I’m raising money for a cause incredibly close to our hearts- Bristol Children’s Hospital. In support of the strongest girl I know, Emma Rowlands, 13y.

Emma was just 8 years old when her life changed forever. Whilst on a skiing holiday with her Mum, Dad & brother in France, she suddenly became seriously ill and was diagnosed with kidney failure. Since then, she has faced more challenges than most people could imagine.

Over the years, Emma has undergone multiple procedures including dialysis and blood transfusion at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and eventually received the most precious gift of all — a live kidney donated by her mum.

Now, after recently battling pneumonia, Emma is back in hospital due to having a collapsed lung, fluid on her heart/ lungs & fibrinous material in her pericardial sac. Despite everything she has been through, she continues to take it all in her stride with courage, strength, and the most inspiring attitude.

To help raise awareness and money for this amazing charity, I’ll be taking on a skydive challenge! 🪂 Every donation, big or small, will help support families and the incredible work at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

If you’re able to donate or even just share this post, it would mean the world. Thank you for your kindness, support, and for helping raise awareness for such an important cause. 💗

What Zero Pain Means:

A Zero Pain Practice accreditation highlights that the entire clinical team are on board and involved in ensuring superior analgesia (pain) control and advanced techniques of providing this, are practiced for all of our patients, consistently and repeatedly. Optimising pain relief provision encompasses many aspects of daily clinical practice; this starts with our regular consulting sessions, where we aim to settle and relax our patients, so their experience in the practice is positive and as 'pain free' as feasible. We dedicate a lot of time and effort to ensuring our surgical patients are as comfortable as possible, using appropriate and uncompromising analgesic (pain relieving) protocols for each individual patient; this level of care and attention is delivered to our hospitalised patients also. We use regular and repeated recording of pain scores in our patients, intervening where indicated, and providing additional analgesia as required. Finally, we observe and discuss chronic pain situations and management as part of our outpatient consultations; our pets can continue to live their lives to the fullest, when chronic pain conditions are identified and managed appropriately during these consultations. Once identified and diagnosed, we can also provide additional support via our Pain Clinics, referral to a visiting on-site physiotherapist, or other appropriate paraprofessionals.

Stay Safe - Stay on Lead!

It is so important to keep your dog on a lead while on our coast paths.

No matter how obedient your dog is, one distraction can mean disaster.

☀️Heatstroke Awareness☀️

We're sure you are all well aware of the dangers of leaving a dog in a car on a warm day, but did you know that we are 10 times more likely to see a dog with heatstroke after being EXERCISED on a warm day?

While walking your dog ensure that:
🌞you take your dog out at cooler times of the day
🌞your dog takes plenty of breaks
🌞they have access to fresh water to drink
🌞they have access to a shaded area
🌞you avoid excessive exercise - your dog may ask you to throw the ball again but they wont realise they are at risk!🥎🥵

Heatstroke can affect any dog but some dogs can be more at risk for example
🐶Older or very young dogs
🐶Overweight dogs
🐶Long haired breeds
🐶Short nosed breeds

If you own a dog that falls into this category then you'll need to take extra care.

If in doubt, don't go out!
