What Zero Pain Means:

A Zero Pain Practice accreditation highlights that the entire clinical team are on board and involved in ensuring superior analgesia (pain) control and advanced techniques of providing this, are practiced for all of our patients, consistently and repeatedly. Optimising pain relief provision encompasses many aspects of daily clinical practice; this starts with our regular consulting sessions, where we aim to settle and relax our patients, so their experience in the practice is positive and as 'pain free' as feasible. We dedicate a lot of time and effort to ensuring our surgical patients are as comfortable as possible, using appropriate and uncompromising analgesic (pain relieving) protocols for each individual patient; this level of care and attention is delivered to our hospitalised patients also. We use regular and repeated recording of pain scores in our patients, intervening where indicated, and providing additional analgesia as required. Finally, we observe and discuss chronic pain situations and management as part of our outpatient consultations; our pets can continue to live their lives to the fullest, when chronic pain conditions are identified and managed appropriately during these consultations. Once identified and diagnosed, we can also provide additional support via our Pain Clinics, referral to a visiting on-site physiotherapist, or other appropriate paraprofessionals.

Stay Safe - Stay on Lead!

It is so important to keep your dog on a lead while on our coast paths.

No matter how obedient your dog is, one distraction can mean disaster.

☀️Heatstroke Awareness☀️

We're sure you are all well aware of the dangers of leaving a dog in a car on a warm day, but did you know that we are 10 times more likely to see a dog with heatstroke after being EXERCISED on a warm day?

While walking your dog ensure that:
🌞you take your dog out at cooler times of the day
🌞your dog takes plenty of breaks
🌞they have access to fresh water to drink
🌞they have access to a shaded area
🌞you avoid excessive exercise - your dog may ask you to throw the ball again but they wont realise they are at risk!🥎🥵

Heatstroke can affect any dog but some dogs can be more at risk for example
🐶Older or very young dogs
🐶Overweight dogs
🐶Long haired breeds
🐶Short nosed breeds

If you own a dog that falls into this category then you'll need to take extra care.

If in doubt, don't go out!

This is the gorgeous Bonnie. Bonnie was a cheeky puppy and swallowed a stone. She had to have it removed from her stomach with the endoscope. This is the experience the owner had:

“Ok so perhaps I am biased because I work at Penbode.
What an amazing vets they are!! My gorgeous puppy decided to swallow a stone yesterday, she was immediately made to vomit but refused to bring up the stone. I had to take her back in today for it to be removed surgical Pas said he would try to remove it using endoscopy to save her having to be opened up. I’m so pleased to say he managed to extract it from her stomach using the endoscope so no surgery was required.
I’m so grateful to him and the amazing team of nurses who assisted today!!!”

We all send Bonnie lots of well wishes and cuddles! (And please don’t do it again, Bonnie!) 🐶💖

Why are dental radiographs important?

Think of your pets' teeth like icebergs- the part you can see is only part of the whole structure.
Radiographs allow evaluation of the whole tooth, along with the bones around them. Along with a complete oral examination they allow both better diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan. Whilst up to 30% of dental disease in dogs can be missed without radiographs it is staggering 42% in cats.

Our pets often don’t show dental pain unless it is severe. Dental radiographs help give an upper hand in fighting dental disease and the pain that it can cause.

We’re delighted to share that Penbode Vets Stratton has achieved RCVS Hospital Status — the highest level within the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Practice Standards Scheme (PSS).

The PSS is a national accreditation programme designed to ensure veterinary practices meet rigorous standards of care. It’s completely voluntary, and practices are regularly inspected to make sure those high standards are maintained.

Under the scheme, practices can be accredited at three levels:
• Core Standards – the legal minimum all practices must meet.
• General Practice – demonstrating additional investment in patient care, team training, facilities and clinical standards.
• Veterinary Hospital – the highest tier, awarded only to practices that meet all previous standards and also provide advanced facilities, 24-hour on-site care, and the ability to treat more complex cases.

For our clients, this means:
✔ Your pet receives care held to the top recognised standard in the UK
✔ A skilled team working around the clock
✔ Robust clinical protocols, ongoing training and constant quality improvement
✔ Confidence and peace of mind when your pet needs us most

We’re incredibly proud of our team for achieving this accreditation, and we’re grateful to our clients for trusting us with your pets. 💙🐾
