🐾🐾Vet Nurse Awareness Month 🐾🐾

Euthanasia, or putting your pet to sleep, is sometimes the only way to ease a pet's pain and suffering. It is a heart-breaking decision to have to make, but it is often the kindest act of love we can do for our much-loved pet.

As well as the vets and receptionists, our vet nurses will be there for you every step of the way. They will be there if you are finding it difficult to make the hardest decision or struggling to come to terms with it all. They will listen to you and support you the best they can.

When the time comes to say goodbye to your pet, your vet nurse will be there to assist the vet and be support for you and your pet too. The nurse will often help to steady your pet and raise a vein while the vet gives them the injection.

Our vet nurses know just how the heartbreak feels, and so they understand how important it is to have support before, during and after. They will also be there to talk you through what happens after in terms of burial or cremation.

Our staff are always here to help pet owners during what can be a very difficult and upsetting time.

Insurance

We know that Pet Insurance can be confusing, especially at a time when your pet is unwell. We are lucky at Penbode Pet Vets that our pet insurance claims department is managed by one of our nurses. As well as working within our nursing team, Kate works 2 days a week in the office, processing all our pet insurance claims. Because of her clinical background, Kate can liaise with the insurance companies efficiently, answering their questions and queries, meaning that the process is as quick as possible.

If you’d like to make a claim through your pet insurance company, please speak to a member of our Pets reception team and they will ensure that we have all the information we need to be able to process this for you.

💚Vet Nurse Awareness Month💚

🩺Dental Nurse🦷
Our nurses have many important roles during your pet's dental procedure:

🦷Preparation: Our nurses are trained to remove tartar from teeth using an ultrasonic scaler while your pet is under general anaesthesia. The enamel of the tooth in dogs and cats is thinner than human enamel, and so scaling must be performed with care and expertise to avoid damaging the teeth.

🦷Dental charting:
Keeping clear records of your pet's dental health is important as we can use it to plan dental treatment or highlight areas of the mouth that may need monitoring. When our nurses perform dental charting they assess levels of tartar and gingivitis, gum pockets and recession as well as tooth mobility or damage.

🦷Dental x-rays:
Dental x-rays provide information on the health of your pet's teeth below the gum line. Tooth roots are as long as, if not longer than the crown (the visible part) of the tooth, and so x-rays are often necessary to get the full picture. Our nurses are trained to obtain a full set of dental x-rays which will include eight views in total.

🦷Anaesthesia monitoring and pain management:
Dental procedures are often long and often performed on senior pets. Our nurses are required to monitor your pet while under anaesthesia to ensure they remain stable. In recovery, our nurses will encourage your pet to start eating again and will closely monitor pain levels to ensure the pain relief they have received is adequate.

Caring for pets of all shapes and sizes

Here at Penbode Pet Vets we have a dedicated and passionate team of vets, nurses and receptionists who are looking forward to meeting you and your animals. Pets such as Maddy here - our April Pet of the Month who had a reaction to the suture material following abdominal surgery which meant she required second surgery. Maddy really is a fighter and over the next week we saw her every day and she continued to do well. Her owner’s incredible care - including keeping her in, giving her multiple drugs (something Maddy didn’t like!) and gently increasing her exercise - means she has made a full recovery and can now enjoy the garden in the Spring sunshine! (whatever that is!).
