Halloween can be fun for us, but some familiar treats and decorations can be dangerous for pets. On 31 October 2026, help keep your dogs, cats and small animals safe:

🐾 Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats.

🐾 Raisins and sultanas can be highly dangerous, even in small amounts.

🐾 Xylitol, found in some sugar-free sweets and chewing gum, is extremely toxic to pets.

🐾 Keep pumpkins, candles, lit candles and warm wax well out of reach.

🐾 Not every pet enjoys dressing up. Never force your pet to wear a costume.

🐾 Trick-or-treaters, doorbells and unfamiliar noises can be stressful. Set up a quiet safe room away from the front door, with familiar bedding, water and toys.

If you think your pet has eaten something harmful, contact the practice straight away. Do not induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to.

If your pet is living with arthritis, joint pain or a long-term condition, our Class 4 LASER therapy could help them feel more comfortable 💛

This gentle, non-invasive treatment uses near infrared light to reduce pain and inflammation and support your pet's natural healing. Most pets find sessions really relaxing, thanks to a soothing warmth and, of course, the liver paste! 🐾

For pets who need a course of treatment, our chronic condition package is:

• 6 × 40-minute sessions for £150

Treatment will often start with:

• 2 sessions per week for a few weeks, depending on your pet's individual needs

• We'll keep a close eye on how your pet is responding and review the frequency of sessions where appropriate

Wondering whether LASER therapy could help your pet? Book a consultation or simply ask your vet at your next appointment. We are always happy to talk it through, no pressure at all.

Guinea Pig Awareness Week runs from 26 to 30 October 2026, and this year's theme is Happy, Healthy Guinea Pigs 🐹

Guinea pigs are very good at hiding when something is wrong, so five minutes each week tells you a lot. The team behind the week call it the Piggy MOT:

🐾 Teeth: check the front teeth aren't overgrown and that your guinea pig is eating normally.

🐾 Nails: keep them trimmed so moving about stays comfortable.

🐾 Weight: weigh weekly. A change in weight is often the first sign that something is wrong.

🐾 Hay: hay should make up most of their diet, and they should be eating it steadily through the day.

🐾 Skin and rear end: check for sores, mites and anything unusual.

If something doesn't look right, or your guinea pig is off their food, please book a check-up. We see guinea pigs and other small furries at PowisVets, and our purpose-built clinic has separate wards so they are never within sight or smell of cats and dogs.

Meet Cruz: possibly the coolest patient in the practice 😎🐾

This is nurse Jo's lovely Border Collie, who came in for laser therapy to help with a sore foot. Those protective goggles definitely make a statement! Laser therapy can help reduce pain and inflammation, and support healing. We can help with pets’ feet and joints too.

Did you know that by the age of three, most dogs and cats already have some form of dental disease? 🦷

It often starts quietly. A little tartar, then sore gums, then bad breath that owners put down to "just dog breath". By the time a pet is dropping food or pawing at their mouth, the problem is usually well established and much harder to treat.

The good news is that dental disease is one of the most preventable conditions we see. A check-up, a scale and polish when needed, and a simple home routine can keep a mouth comfortable for years.

That is why we are offering 10% off dental treatments for dogs and cats, from 1 October to 30 November 2026.

If you have noticed any of these, it is worth a check:

🐾 Bad breath
🐾 Yellow or brown build-up on the teeth
🐾 Red or bleeding gums
🐾 Dropping food, chewing on one side or dribbling
🐾 Pawing at the mouth, or reluctance to have their face touched

Book an appointment and we will let you know honestly what your pet needs, and what it will cost, before anything goes ahead.

Call us on 01384 372849 or WhatsApp us on +447458195820.

Terms and conditions apply.

Offer available from 1 October to 30 November 2026.
