βοΈπ₯ TOP TIPS ON BEATING THE HEAT π₯βοΈ
Things sure are heating up this week, so we would like to share with you our Top Tips on how you can make your pets more comfortable during the hot weather!
πΎ DOβs:
β
Ensure your pet has a constant supply of fresh water
β
Ice cubes can be put into your pets water bowl to gradually cool down the water and encourage drinking
β
If your pet has light skin and pink extremities (such as their ears or muzzle) then pet safe suncream should be applied to prevent them from burning
β
Make sure that they have access to shaded areas to go in if they are outside
β
Cool mats, frozen treats (like frozen stuffed kongs & frozen lik-e-lix), fans, cooling/water toys and cooling bandanas are great ways to help cool your pets down
β
For long haired animals, consider shaving / regular grooming of their fur
β
For our small furries - providing plenty of shade, putting cool water on their ears & providing a frozen container of water for them to lie by or lick is a helpful way to keep them cool
πΎ DO NOTβs:
β Never leave animals in cars on hot days, even if you have the window down slightly!
β Do not walk dogs in the heat of the day - take them out very early before the day heats up or last thing at night. Consider missing walks for those that are at higher risk of overheatingβ¦ such as your short nosed/flat faced breeds (bracycephalics), geriatric dogs, young puppies and dogs with long fur / double coats
β Dogs can also burn their feet when walking on hot ground - if you place your hand on the ground & you are unable to hold it there for over 5 seconds then the ground is too hot for your dogs pads

π‘οΈWhat are the signs of heatstroke? π‘οΈ
Heavy panting/breathing, open mouth breathing, lethargy, confusion, loss of coordination, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea, shaking, weakness & seizures.
If you do suspect that your pet may have heatstroke, this is an emergency situation and your pet must be seen right away by a veterinary surgeon. Whilst you are contacting the vets/ travelling to the vets you can begin to start cooling down your pet by:
β
Move your pet immediately to a shaded, well ventilated area
β
Pour cool water onto their pads, head, groin, abdomen area. Cool tap water is sufficient enough to cool them down
β
Cool Wet Towels - You can put cool wet towels over your pet, however you must be mindful that they do not stay on too long as they can then have the opposite effect and begin to trap the heat
β
Cover ice packs and place them around your pet or on your pets feet/pads
And as always we are here for you! If you have any questions or queries regarding the hot weather & your pet, please donβt hesitate to give us a call and we will be happy to advise you π
