We have a helping hand this winter from our locum vet Louise, she is able to offer acupuncture sessions while she is here.

Acupuncture is increasingly being used in our pets to help manage a variety of symptoms. The main one is pain. It essentially works by tricking the body as it thinks the needles will cause damage (but they don't), this blocks the pain signals and activates the body to produce its own natural painkillers,

For us, this is commonly used for arthritic pain but it can also be used for abdominal pain (e,g, from the pancreas, bladder, and intestinal tract), acute pain or other types of chronic pain e.g. from disc disease, muscular strains etc.

We are lucky to have a CT machine on site at the clinic that allows us to take complex images of the patient that visit us with orthopaedic problems. This CT is from a lovely Labrador suffering from a condition called elbow dysplasia which in this case had led to a small fracture in one of the bones inside the elbow joint. We removed the damaged portion of bone and the patient is thankfully now back to normal life. #dog #IVC #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #ortho #veterinary

Odin is finding his feet again after recovering from shoulder surgery to remove a section of loose cartilage from his shoulder joint. The condition is called osteochondrosis dissecans and is a disease seen in young developing dogs.
