Are you choosing the right dog?

When humans buy a car we tend to take it for a test drive first. That’s not so easy when you’re thinking of buying a dog. So let Paws4fun UK help you make the right decision for you and for the dog.

Humans mostly choose their dogs based on the look of the breed or it can often become an emotional decision. It’s one of the issues we encounter in our behaviour training where people have underestimated the physical & physiological needs of the dog.

We offer some very practical advice for potential dog owners as it’s important to take the time to really understand what the new pup will require in terms of its care, your time and the energy and effort required to fulfil your new dogs needs.

Some things to consider:

1. What knowledge do you have about the breed?

2. Are you physically capable of handling the dog’s strength, its energy, power?

3. Can you match the dog’s physical excercise needs?

4. Do you have the knowledge, time and the level of commitment needed to fulfil the dogs psychological needs and its training?

5. Does your home environment match the dog’s needs?

6. Is your choice of dog a logical or emotional decision?

Our dog behaviourists can help you make the right choice and give you expert advice on matching the right dog to your own lifestyle. We can also help you to build a fantastic relationship between you and your dog for the long term. Today we continue our highlighting our pack series with the fabulous Reggie & Ernie. The boys are miniature poodles and brothers from the same household with Ernie being the youngest.

The breed is known for their friendliness, intelligence & the boys have bags of love to give everyone they meet. Their owners don’t need a doorbell when we arrive to pick them up as the boys are already so excited and raring to go & cannot wait to get into the van. They love being in the vehicle as long as they have a view out the window they are happy and are so good on our journeys out.

On arrival in daycare they both seek out their best friends which for Ernie it’s Margot and for Reggie he’s best friends with Sasha, Bella, & Benji. Their favourite place has to be Attingham park where they feel right at home in the grandeur of the grounds. They love to see the deer in the park & can’t wait for our coffee shop stop to say hello to the other visitors & in the hope that they get a nice cheeky biscuit as a treat.

Dinner time is always Reggie’s favourite time whilst Ernie waits until his brothers finished, I’m sure it’s just to check he didn’t get a bigger portion or anything different to eat.

They have their own great sense of humour & immediately tune into any excitement from me, they absolutely love to have a dance when the music is on in the house. Both boys love to sunbathe and always want to be outdoors although they are not too impressed when we venture out in the rain.

The boys tend to be the last to go home of an evening and when all of the other dogs have left they have a mad half hour chasing after each other and they play like it’s going out of fashion.

They never believe me when I joke that their mom doesn’t want them back anymore & that i may have to chuck them in the bin 😂. They then know it’s home time and love to tell mom all about their fabulous day out & how naughty I’ve been teasing them.

In our highlighting our pack series we talk about Lester today. He’s an incredible Bulldog and full of character, love, loyalty & resilience. Bulldogs are often associated with determination, strength & courage and Lester has them all in abundance.

When Lester arrives on his regular days he cannot wait to get in to say hello to everyone. His confidence and calmness means he has lots of friends and he is amazing whenever we introduce new dogs to the pack. He always makes the newbies feel relaxed and at home as he’s been with us since our very early days as a business. You can just image him saying “stick with me & I’ll show you how it all works”.

Lester absolutely loves a fuss & can’t wait to take in all the sights sounds and smells on our walks. He’s also a little powerhouse that is more than capable of taking your knees out if things get too excited, but he knows how to play nicely and responds really well to a calm voice.

His favourite place has to be Cannock chase where he loves to explore the wilderness. For fun he’s also a shadow & reflection chaser & he can dart from one side of the room to another within a millisecond.

One of the things we have loved the most is seeing Lester grow over the years he’s been with us, not just in age but in his confidence, his calmness and his chilled approach to life. Nothing phases him and everyone knows he’s a front of the pack dog & never feels the need to prove it.

Lester means the world to his owners and we could not wish for such a beautiful boy to have the privilege of looking after each week.

Someone is trying to convince me he’s not just had his dinner. “Please sir, can I have some more”. Dogs can smell a choc ice a mile away 😂, but no Melvin it’s not for doggies.

Today we continue our ‘highlighting our pack’ series with the absolutely adorable Millie. She’s been with us almost from the start of our Paws4fun pack and what an amazing little pocket rocket she is. Despite being such a tiny girl Millie definitely knows how to get her own way and she wraps us around her little paws everyday & we love her for it.

From the moment we pick her up she is fully of life’s energy and excitement and it’s entirely infectious. When I go into her owners house she darts in like a whirling dervish with her gorgeous squeak to say hello. She then runs up and down the stairs a few times just to make sure everything’s ok before she leaves with us. Like many of our pack she knows exactly what crate she’s going into & if it changes for any reason I get one of those looks 😂.

As soon as we arrive in daycare Millie is looking for either Margot or Roxy as her playmates and cannot wait to say hello. Probably her most favourite place to walk has to be Attingham park where she gets to see the deer but more importantly she looks forward to a quick lick of the cappuccino at the cafe if she’s given half a chance. We can set our watch to Millie telling everyone when it’s lunch time & guess who is always first in the queue? Yes it’s Millie & woe betide anyone pushing in. What always makes me laugh is all the other dogs lining up behind her like a dinner queue at school. In the afternoons Millie loves to have a snuggle up and watch a movie or better still try to convince us that we all missed lunch.

At home time she has to be with her best friends on the way back. There have been so many special times with Millie & we could not wish for a more loving, excitable and grateful girl to have in our daycare. She loves every minute, and we do too.

We have had an amazingly busy start to the year and this weekend is no exception with our behaviour training being fully booked.

Behaviour problems often occur when we as humans are not fulfilling our dog’s needs. So here are three quick tips to make sure you do.

Excercise
Is for the dogs body, make sure you give your dog appropriate physical and structured exercise. Remember the limits on how much you exercise pups in their development stages and older dogs in their later years.

Discipline
For the mind, give your dog rules, boundaries and limitations. These should challenge the dogs mind so the dogs has to think about what it needs to do. How does it fit into rules, what are its boundaries, are what are its limits. Your leadership is crucial here!

Affection
For the heart, making sure you are giving your dog affection when it’s calm or when it’s doing something you have asked it to do. Affection is a really powerful reward tool & we can use it to nurture our dog’s mindset. Make sure your dog’s body and mind are in the correct place before giving affection.

Dog behaviour training is not just about solving a problem, it’s also about improving your relationship with your dog and better understanding its needs. If you want that fantastic relationship with your dog or you want to find out more about our behaviour training and our award winning services call or WhatsApp us on 0333 335 5833, email us at [email protected] or visit us at www.paws4fun.uk

One of the biggest issues we see in our dog behaviour training is where owners have neglected their role in the 3 stages of puppyhood.

Stage 1. Follow state - 2 to 4 months. The most important stage where having just come from mom your pup is asking the question “who in this house am I going to follow”’. This is a critical psychological following phase in your puppies life, if you don’t show leadership as an owner your puppy won’t follow you!

Stage 2. Play phase. 4 to 6 months. This is the stage where your puppy starts to explore and learn about themselves, their body, where do I fit in? If an owner has missed stage one your pup will take the leadership role and take the lead in play! This is the stage where we want the dog to understand limits of play. (Leadership)

Stage 3. Explore phase. 6 to 8 months. Your dogs starts to explore the outside world. If you have not demonstrated leadership, your dog’s going to explore without you, potentially run off, ignore your recall and do its own thing.

So what is leadership? We can teach you this in our puppy training & behaviour sessions. We show you how to parent your dog & how to mimic the role of a mom dog & what they would do with their puppies.
