Puppy problems.
Often from too much freedom and not many boundaries.
We all want to see our puppy running about having fun, exploring the house and garden.
But if this is the norm from week one what makes you think the pup will want to recall back in the house, stop jumping on you and the couch, or want to be placed in a restrictive crate/area for sleep?!
Its likely that when you need the puppy to start behaving calmly as you need, and responding to you when you need, they will show you the PAW 🐾.
They will not have a clue, oher than the commonly trained 'sit'.
Whats the solution?
Less means more.
Give them less freedom and train the behaviours you want during this time. You will then get more listening, engagement and learning. This approach is so much more effective and makes getting freedom an actual powerful positive reinforcement tool (Premack principle).
Imagine trying to remove the garden freedom, soft couch jump play and/or running around the house. It would be like you staying in every night having experienced a social life in your teens. Tantrums and refusal incoming!!
So getting a new puppy?
Get the basics set in motion.
Sleep area used when you decide. This helps them get sleep/rest and build a habit for being left alone. If they take themselves to sleep/rest that is ok. But they need to be happy settling/resting when you need them to.
Introduce the collar, harness and lead early on. You can then let them in the garden but on a lead.
Start on 'eye contact' and close play activities.
Start Recall games such as 'follow me', 'reflex to name'.
So many things to do.
If you've got or getting a new puppy. I'm jealous.
But I can get my puppy fix helping you.
