Here's dog training advice that might hurt your feelings.

β—‹ Your dog won't get better if you avoid every trigger.

β—‹ Your dogs emotional needs probably aren't being met.

β—‹ Your dog would be a lot happier and less reactive if you gave them a job to do.

β—‹ Your behaviour needs to be consistent to make progress on walks.

β—‹ You will never solve your dogs training issues if the pain/discomfort they are in isn't dealt with.

β—‹ Not every off lead dog or owner is out to get you.

β—‹ There is never a right time to begin training your dog.

β—‹ You'll never achieve what you want if you constantly jump between training plans/other trainers.

β—‹ Your dog isn't special. Training works, you've just not been applying it properly.

To be clear, I say variations of these things to students all the time. When you take them on board, you'll make progress.

Simple as that.

Why does your dog bark at people/dogs by themselves?

Your dog might be totally fine in crowds of people, or seeing loads of dogs.

But a single person/dog, walking down the street by themselves? Carnage. Why is that?

I call it the Lone Person effect. It's all to do with focus.

We'll use a human example. Let's say you're walking down a dark street. As you're walking, you spot a group of people walking towards you.

You might be a bit nervous, but honestly? You're feeling pretty solid.

Let's switch it up. Imagine you're walking down a dark street, and a single person is walking towards you.

You'll most likely be more tense, right? And your brain will fixate on them.

The same thing can happen with dogs. Your dog might be fine with men in hats in a crowd, because there's so much else to focus on. But when that's the only thing?

Reactions happen.

It's why it's important to expose you dog, and work around, different levels of stimulation. Seeing a crowd of people is just as important as seeing a single person.

So that's why!

πŸ’œTHE WITCHING HOURπŸ’œ

So, it was mentioned in our last Membership Coaching Call that around 9pm tends to be the 'Witching Hour' when dogs suddenly start some behaviours such as annoying other dogs/people in the house or barking etc....

Do you experience this?

Well, this can be down to them trying to get rid of some pent up energy when wanting to settle down for the night.

The best thing to do is to provide some enriching tasks for them to do so that they can spend some energy that isn't running about or playing.

We had a doggy houseguest recently and he was showing these kind of behaviours around 9pm.

I gave Joey and our guest snuffle boxes with tiny pieces of frozen veg sprinkled in them and then when it was packed away, they had a lick mat to reduce their levels further.

TO NOTE: Because it is food related and they had elevated levels I separated them for the tasks with a stair gate in between them. This takes the pressure off them.

As soon as this finished I said ok, time for chilling now, they took themselves off to lay down.

Joey on his bed in the lounge and our guest on my bed upstairs.

It was then time for us humans to relax 😌 Namaste πŸ™
