Everyone's talking about not walking dogs in the heat, and yes, absolutely. But what about when you're home? Here's what I'm doing right now to keep Buddy and Sully cool indoors.

Cooling vests are on, but here's the bit people miss: check them regularly. If the vest dries out, it stops working. Keep it damp and it keeps doing its job.

Beyond that, I've got:

✔️ Curtains closed to block out the heat
✔️ Fans on to keep the air moving
✔️ Cooling mats down for them to flop on whenever they need
✔️ Drinking water kept cool throughout the day

And my favourite trick for dogs who aren't drinking enough? Put a little food or some treats in their bowl, then pour water on top. They'll drink the water to get to the good stuff. Simple, but it works.

Hot weather with dogs doesn't have to be stressful. A few small tweaks make a big difference.

A heartbreaking reminder this spring

As tulip fields come into bloom, many people are heading out to enjoy their beauty, but they can pose a very real danger to our dogs.

This week, BBC News reported the tragic death of a dog after ingesting part of a tulip plant, a devastating reminder of how serious this risk can be.

Tulips are toxic to dogs, especially the bulbs, and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling and, in severe cases, heart or breathing complications.

We would strongly advise not taking your dog to tulip fields or similar attractions. It simply isn’t worth the risk.

If you believe your dog has eaten any part of a tulip, please contact your vet immediately.

We share this not to alarm, but to help keep dogs safe. A little extra awareness can make all the difference.
