🐾 Resource Guarding in Dogs: What It Is & How to Handle It .
🐶Scallywags School For Dogs Ltd🐾

Let’s chat about resource guarding—the growling, stiffening, or snapping dogs sometimes do around food, toys, or other “precious” things. It can look scary, but it’s actually normal canine behaviour.

Dogs are born with a natural instinct to protect valuable resources—especially food—just like humans might get annoyed if someone tried to steal a chip from their plate

And here’s the key: it’s not about dominance or trying to be the “alpha.” Modern behaviour research shows dominance theory simply doesn’t explain these situations. In many cases, it actually makes things worse.

Often, guarding gets stronger when a dog is stressed. High stress or poor sleep can make dogs more reactive and less tolerant—just like us when we’re overtired or overwhelmed.

⭐ So what can you do?

1. Keep it calm.
Don’t punish growling. It’s communication. Thank your dog (silently!) for the warning and give them space.

2. Build trust.
Let them eat or chew in peace. Predictability helps them relax.

3. Make good things happen.
Approach their valued items with treats to teach them that humans coming closer = good news.

4. Reduce stress.
Ensure plenty of sleep (dogs need 14–16 hours!) and avoid overstimulating situations.

5. Get help if needed.
