🐾 June Pet Care: Beat the Bugs

June = peak activity for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes in the UK. Ticks carry Lyme disease; fleas cause allergies, skin infections, and tapeworms.

Vet-approved tips:
1. Check fur daily after walks, focus on ears, neck, armpits, paws, and tail
2. Keep grass short; avoid overgrown/wooded areas at dawn/dusk
3. Wash bedding weekly at 60°C; vacuum regularly
4. Use a proper tick remover, never squeeze, burn, or use alcohol (risk of infection)

Recommended supplies:
• spot ons, oral chews, or collars
• Tick removal tools
• Fine flea combs & pet safe household sprays
• Repellent sprays (safe for pets)
• Garden pest control (safe when dry)

💡 Vet note: Lyme disease risk rises if ticks stay attached >24 hours, early removal is key. Always choose products approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

🐝 It’s Bees’ Needs Week 2026! 🐝

13–19 July 2026

Organised by Defra, this annual campaign raises awareness of just how vital bees and pollinators are, they help grow 1 in every 3 bites of food we eat and keep our countryside blooming. Sadly, many species are declining due to habitat loss, fewer flowers, and pesticide use.

What we can do to help:

1. Grow bee-friendly flowers, choose lavender, poppies, clover, sunflowers, and wildflowers; aim for blooms from spring to autumn
2. Go wild a little, leave patches of long grass, bare soil, or dead stems for nesting and hibernation
3. Add a water spot, shallow dish with stones so bees can drink safely without drowning
4. Cut pesticides, switch to natural, bee safe gardening methods
5. Give shelter, install a bee hotel or leave log piles for solitary bees
