DRY TREADMILL THERAPY HERE AT MANOR FARM REHAB EXPLAINED

Video below is two wonderful young Showjumpers owned & produced by Jess Rood GB Show Jumper who uses our facilities regularly as part of her maintenance for all her horses

A dry treadmill improves a horseโ€™s fitness by providing controlled, repeatable exercise that enhances cardiovascular capacity, muscular development, and movement efficiency. It is widely used as part of a structured conditioning programme alongside ridden work.

Cardiovascular Conditioning
Treadmill exercise elevates heart rate and respiratory activity in a consistent and measurable manner. Over time, this promotes improvements in:
* cardiac efficiency
* oxygen transport to working muscles
* respiratory capacity
* overall endurance
This type of conditioning is comparable to interval and endurance training methods used in human athletic performance programmes.

Muscular Development
Continuous treadmill exercise encourages sustained muscular engagement, particularly in the:
* hindquarters
* topline and back musculature
* shoulders
* core stabilising muscles
Incline training further increases workload on the hind limbs, promoting greater propulsion strength and muscular activation.
Improved Stride Consistency and Coordination
Because treadmill speed remains constant, horses are encouraged to maintain:
* a regular rhythm
* balanced stride patterns
* improved coordination and symmetry of movement
This consistency can enhance gait efficiency and neuromuscular coordination.

Aerobic and Anaerobic Fitness
Different treadmill protocols can target specific energy systems:
* low-intensity, longer-duration sessions support aerobic endurance
* higher-intensity interval work develops anaerobic capacity and recovery efficiency
The controlled environment allows trainers to regulate workload with greater precision than is typically possible during field or ridden exercise.
Increased Training Efficiency
Compared with outdoor exercise, treadmill conditioning reduces interruptions caused by:
* variable terrain
* weather conditions
* rider inconsistency
* environmental distractions
As a result, horses can spend a greater proportion of the session working continuously, improving overall training efficiency.
Controlled Incline Training
Many dry treadmills include adjustable incline settings. Uphill work at the walk or trot can:
* increase hindquarter engagement
* develop propulsion and pushing power
* encourage greater joint flexion
* strengthen supporting soft tissues and stabilising structures
These adaptations may contribute positively to performance in disciplines such as racing, show jumping, dressage, and eventing.
Weight Management and Metabolic Health
Regular treadmill exercise increases caloric expenditure and supports:
* healthy body condition
* favourable muscle-to-fat ratio
* improved metabolic fitness

Behavioural and Mental Benefits
Structured treadmill routines may also promote improved focus and relaxation in some horses. However, individual responses vary, and gradual acclimatisation is important to minimise stress and build confidence with the equipment.
Role Within a Conditioning Programme
Equine treadmill training is generally used to complement, rather than replace, ridden exercise. When incorporated appropriately into a broader conditioning programme, it can provide a safe, consistent, and highly controllable method of improving equine fitness and performance.
